I hurt my back last week, doctor prescribed hydrocodone. I've been taking half of a pill once a day, right before bed time. I didn't take one night before last, and my back hurt so bad it kept me up most of the night. I'm really freaked out about getting addicted to this stuff. I never take pain pills because I hate how they make me feel, but I kind of like how they feel at bed time. My back still hurts a little, but it's kind of numb, and the pill makes me just not care about the pain anyway. So can anyone tell me about the signs that I might be getting addicted? It worries me that I like how they feel at bedtime. I have a two year old, I can't get hooked on this stuff. And is 2.5 mg a day enough to get you hooked? The doctor said my back should be better in 4-6 weeks, so if I take 2.5 mg a day for that long will I get addicted?

You know you're addicted when you no longer have pain and you are still taking them. Understand that they were given to you for a reason. Use them only for that reason. If you have any left over dispose of them. Good luck!

The clinical evidence would show that if you take them as prescribed, only as needed, and on a short-term basis, your probability for addiction is very small. The exception to this rule would be if you know you have an addictive personality. For example, do you already have vices such as video games, alcohol, food, or gambling, etc that you use to get through the day emotionally? If the answer to that question is yes, be wary; otherwise treat your symptoms.

The advise that I see I agree with. I'm happy that you are concerned about addiction. I know too many people that want that feeling that pain killers can give. I stay away from them as much as possible. Keep up with your awareness. It sounds to me like you have a handle on it.

Only 2.5mg isn't enough to get you addicted. Most addicts are taking minimum 20+ mg a day. Take them as prescribed and stop using them as soon as you feel you can get through the day without them.

I had an emergency back surgery. Try anything else as much as possible! I had a small amount for a short period also and had the worst withdrawal ever. Couldn't sleep, bathroom issues, sweats, etc. It was the worst and I will never take it again. Try higher dosages of ibuprofen if possible!

It depends, Has anyone in your family have/ had addiction issues? There is an addiction gene that is medically known.

A family member ended up in the icu and needed a blood transfusion because of too much ibuprofen, so I'm kind of nervous about taking too much of that. Thanks for the info though! I'll keep an eye out for those things!

no, no history of addiction, other than a few family members who smoke cigarettes.
