I agree with an earlier response that the "powers that be" in Owensboro have basically killed it. In 2000 or 2001, Jackyl was there on a big stage on Frederica Street. The crowd was enormous, and they played forever. When they got done, there were two or three good bars (not some beer snob place like Gambrinus) within walking distance, and the party continued. When the bars closed, there was still some action out in the streets. And around 3 or 4 in the morning, everyone could go back to the Big E and crash in one of 600 affordable rooms without having to drive somewhere and endanger everyone on the roads.

That year, in my opinion, was the height of the BBQ fest. It was an awesome party. The attendance numbers agree with me. It's been in steady decline ever since.

Like it or not, people who like to drink and party and have a good time spend a lot of money at something like the BBQ fest. You run them off, and you hurt the event. Owensboro has plenty of stuff for the goody-two-shoes crowd already; and unfortunately, they've taken over the BBQ fest, too.

The city is not over the festival and the only benefit they get is the tourism. I agree they need to pull in some bigger name bands.
I remember jackyl coming and the stage that had karaoke. It use to be be way better than it is now. But it needs help from the community to make it successful!

Otherwise engaged this weekend. I agree it is not the same as the "glory days" and the blame should fall upon the committee that chairs the festival.
