Manslaughter in Candor

What is going on, I heard last night that a man was beat nearly to death by a local at Calico Jacks on Saturday night. The victim's injuries were fatal and he recently passed away! My god is a mans life worth such a trivial disagreement...what was the perpetrator unhappy with the song choice on the juke box? What is this world coming to? I have always thought of Candor as a safe place to raise a family. I loved going to school in a small town where you knew everyone (even the perp from the recent crime). I guess people need to learn how to handle their liquor and their tempers, not to mention hold the human life with a bit more respect.

I haven't seen anything in the news so hopefully the rumor is incorrect regarding the victims death. I have no way to verify and hate to continue the story.

I'm hearing conflicting stories. Some are saying he's dead and others are saying he was released. I don't know but I’m pretty sure he’s alive but not well. This is a terrible incident and I hope everyone comes out ok. Here’s the ongoing story: After a brilliant management decision, the owner of calicos decided it was ok to server alcohol after 2 am and let his friends and family party into the morning. Not only is this illegal, it is dangerous because people were inebriated and no one seemed to care. Then there was a minor altercation that turned into a grotesque beating. The owner’s brother (who has arms as big as my legs) started pummeling a smaller man and continued to beat him even after he was unconscious! While the man choked on his own blood and convulsed on the floor they would not call an ambulance so the owner’s brother had time to get out of there. They didn’t want it to look like people were still drinking after hours either. It’s too bad because they had a good thing going there and how could anyone ever view that place as a family establishment now? They should have forgotten about the restaurant and just opened a redneck bar because that’s all it is! The owner decided that it was more important to party than to provide safety and good management. How could you watch a man bleed all over the floor your establishment and waste time to save some monster and try to come up with a good story for the cops. Disgusting!

Hey, some more info, not sure if its true or not either. But I heard 2 off duty law enforcement officers were also present during the whole ordeal,locals of course. I hope they look into all this and investigate what happened that night. I feel for the victims family and what they might be going through.

These are the same stories i have heard from people that where there, i beleive it too. These drunk ass rednecks,crooked cops and big shot owner meatheads get quite an ego when they drink or just walk in there during the day and feel the vibe. Plus if this didnt really happen tell the story people.....or wait were are the police reports have not seen one yet!

First, let me say that you need to get a grip! These rumors are a joke. The guy did NOT die, nor was he in ICU. If you would like to see the police report request it through a FOIL request if it is so important to you!

Small business is essential to our local economy and with EVERY small business there is inherent risk. Instead of being manly or womanly for that matter and raising your issues directly to a live person, you cowards have gone to the internet where there is no censorship and you can repetitively tell lies, etc. and continue the melodrama of living in a small town like Candor.

Why don't you folks take up REAL issues in our community, like the pedophiles, the teacher arrested for sex crimes right in our own community...the fact that Tioga County has and needs small businesses to survive!

If I were the owners of Calico....I would look to each of you for defamation of character especially considering you have NO idea what you are talking about!

Um yea... well I WAS there right as it was going down (I was with friend picking up her boyfriend) and it looked like a slaughterhouse on the floor! We were SOBER and had a bit more perspective than all of the VERY DRUNK people present and still drinking!! Thank god someone had just called the cops and an ambulance in spite of the owner’s insistence that he was fine. Yea right! You could barely get in the door because the guy was on the floor in a puddle of his own blood! Small FAMILY businesses are AWESOME (like the Iron Kettle Farm for instance) but redneck law-breaking bars suck! Bottom line: they were serving WAY past the legal closing time (with an underaged bartender, no doubt serving her friends who were tipsy in the parking lot) and the owner did NOTHING to stop his BEAST of a brother from beating a man in his own establishment. Then he tried to give him time to escape- and make sure he was gone by the time the authorities showed up. Some business owner! You have to take RESPONSIBILITY for what is going on in your establishment. He made MANY very poor choices that night. Egos, testosterone and booze NEVER mix well…

Wow darling you are a real drama major. I was there to cleaning with the staff. The owner did nothing to stop it becouse he couldn't, the hole thing happened and lasted in about 2 seconds while he was busy (30ft away)trying to convince the other of the injured party to leave again. Yes they were asked to leave once and returned. While know one wants to see anybody hurt,sometimes things happen so fast it's impossable to stop. It's scary when someone gets knocked out but he was fine. Banged up but walking, talking and wanting to go home. 3 things disgrunteled one. 1. The legal age to bartend is 18. 2. It's a privatly owned restaurant so after legal close an owner and who ever they want can party til sun up if they want to, it's no different than parting in your back yard. 3 the party that was savagely beaten as you put it, could not press charges becouse he was the instagator and initiator. He also has a long history of this kind of behavior. I know both parties and you have dead wrong. You clearly have something against this family and if you don't want yourself brought up on charges you probably should let it go. I hope every one reading this can see through the B.S. I go there every weekend and I can tell you it is a class establishment.

Someone told me this site was out there and I cant beleive I'm lowering myself to this level but I have the info the 10 people who read this site need. Nobody was killed or died as a result of a fight at Calico Jacks. The story got blown out of proportion becouse another man from the same area fell from scafolding and had major head injuries and later passed away from them. Different man, different hospital (Ithaca) totally unrelated. The man who got his eye dotted was transported to bingahamton and recieved a few stitches and was released. Home,back to work, fine. As suspected all the haters are tied somehow to local competetors. Nice try, CJ's is still well and good, Best food, best atmosphere, best staff, best thing to happen to that area for a long time. Very creative tho, beast!!, monsters!!! fugitives!! Rednecks!!sluts!!, all great stuff. And "Punks place", wow ! Do them a favor and dont talk to much about that location's history.

Hey wow: what is that an advertisement? "CJ's is still well and good, Best food, best atmosphere, best staff, best thing to happen to that area for a long time" LOL! I agree! But to be honest it should say:“best atmosphere until about 10pm, then it’s just another redneck bar.” Right?
And to amazed: I was SOBER, and I’m assuming you were NOT if you were there all night, so I’ll leave you with your foggy version. I have nothing against the family and don’t even know what the hel1 punks is. The only other bar I know of out there is the friggen legion. Ye haw! I was simply giving my perspective on what we walked into. I guess I’m not used to seeing a man on the floor bleeding all over the place. It was very unexpected and as a mother it scared the crap out of me!
I was so relived to hear that that guy was ok and I hope it drives a lesson home about the responsibilities of owning a bar/restaurant. Their feet are still wet- but they’ll bounce back and figure things out. Overall it IS a good business and has done a ton of good for the community (fundraising thousands for relay for life and whatnot) and that should not be forgotten because of one brawl. We really do love the food there and were excited to have a new place to go to. I was just very disappointed at the lack of safety- all it would have taken was some pepper spray and the guy would have been gone- end of story and no death rumors flying around candor, Spencer, Ithaca, and god know where else. Now if someone wraps their car around a tree after drinking until 3 am, that’s a whole other story… it think the parents of this community need to unite to provide better safety and sobriety checks to get the drunks off of the streets so these small businesses can avoid such nasty happenings. Period.
