Well, since any student can begin a fight at any time rather on school grounds or not, then use their justification and just suspend all the students because they "might" start a fight. This superintendent has crossed the lines of discipline.
You didn't read close enough. Students may be disciplined for actions that take place off school grounds, if the actions are somehow connected to the school. That is case law.

The boys planned the fight while at a school event; a football game.

Therefore, the school is on solid legal ground concerning the suspension.

Private schools get to pick and choose who they educate. Public schools must take every child that shows up at their doors.

All this talk for what. The bottom line is that as a parent we are suppose to take up for our children it is our job to protect them. However when they are wrong we are suppose to handle that as well. That parent dosent have to post punish his child in front of the public it his child not the public and it is his responsibility not the schools. All you smart mouths talking about get over it, You get over. NO body wants their child to be picked on. It dosen't matter what side of the fence your child is on, a child should know that their parents are there for them no matter what the consequences are that they have to face. If they are wrong they know they will be in trouble when they get home and if they are not their parents will support them and that is all that matters. It was a fight and I am sure it was not the first the school has heard off and will not be the last. So let it go and the school should allow the parents to handle they child if it is not handled and it becomes a problem on campus then they school should step in.

First of all, all you people trying to tell Mr. Burger how he should and shouldn't raise his son should really grow up. Quit worrying about him and spend more time on your own kids. Yes he made a mistake but I believe the school has no right to discipline him for fighting off campus. Yes their should be some sort of disciplinary act but it's not for the school to decide. It's up to Morgan's Parents to handle that and make sure the same mistake doesn't happen again. Oh, and for you hypocrites the key word is MISTAKE!! Just like we all do and will do. No ones perfect. Morgan truly is a great kid and for those of you who don't know him but think they have the right to judge him for a MISTAKE he made is really childish and immature.

I can't believe people are willing to allow a school to punish for off campus activities under any circumstances. There are enough criminal and civil remedies available without the schools geting involved. Not standing up to this action is a very dangerous precedent. Schools are assuming more and more authority everyday and I don't remember learning in college that schools are a part of the civil and criminal justice system. The school decided both was guilty based on a zero tolerance policy for fighting. Is that the way it works in the justice system? The answer is a resounding NO. Courts will establish guilt or innocence. If schools are to wear the badge they MUST provide due process and protect individual constitutional rights. Very dangerous indeed for a country that was founded by persecuted people.
