What exactly is the purpose of a Police Department in a town? Is it to serve and protect? Well, an experience that happened to my 20 year old college student son and his friend at a local diner in Maplewood proved that the police in Maplewood certainly DO NOT serve and protect its citizens. When my son's car keys were pick-pocketed from him at an eating establishment one evening- the police were called to advise and help my son and his companion around midnight. My son was told by the police that responded, that "long haired punks like him were wasting their time and that he was "stupid" for be pick-pocketed. They stated that there was nothing they could do, even though the kids requested a ride or some sort of help in keeping tabs on the vehicle until my son could get someone to help. They were told they were on their own even though a report was filed on the incident. My son and his petite female companion stayed by the vehicle all night for fear the pick-pocket would return and steal the car. The thief did return at 5:00am and proceeded to attempt to put the key in the car door until my son wrestled him and reclaimed the car key. Luckily, my son and his friend returned safely back home. Why would our taxes be wasted on a police force who are disrespectful, arrogant and irresponsible to their citizens? Who would abandon 2 young people who were in obvious need of help in the middle of the night? The Maplewood Police Force, that's who. Does Police Chief Kruse care about the reputation of his department? So again, my question is, who do we depend on to "serve and protect" the citizens of Maplewood?

I can definately add to that. Sort of ...
We had an experience not too long ago with one of their police officers. We were pulled over for the plates on the car. While I understand the police officer doing his job, what I don't understand is the extreme rudeness.
My husband gave an explaination to him, a truthful, honest one at that. The officer did ticket him(which I understand) smirking included ....My husband was told not to drive,(so how is he meant to get to work?(Where we live there is no metro and no bus service) and got threatened with jail from this jumped up Tw*t and told not to darken the roads of Maplewood again or he would be arrested and the car impounded.
Police officers are supposed to be there for when people need help or something. Yes they are there to uphold the law also but there was absolutely no reason to smirk or be totally arrogant to us. We were not arrogant to him, we were polite. So guys beware when in Maplewood their police officers are getting tarnished with a not so polite but arrogant reputation.
In response to your question. No the police chief must not care about the reputation of his department. They need to be taught some manners and courtesy some compassion would not go amiss either. Police officers should not be allowed to treat people with arrogance and intimidation. They are allowed it seems to be a law unto themselves. It has to stop.
If I could I would fight these tickets on the grounds of the ticket issuers arrogance. We cannot risk an appearance due to the fact that they may arrest my husband for a traffic violation. Yes the tickets will be paid but there is no way we can make a payment plan on them as they will not deal with this kind of thing over the telephone and a continuance is also out of the question without seeing the judge.

I see a police force that has gotten comfortable with doing their job wrong. I was not told why I was pulled over, it was like he had no clue and had to ask the chief what to do next. No manners, and being uneducated is a pattern with the police and the courts in Maplewood. They act like rapists and terrorists. I won't spend a dime in Maplewood and I am boycotting that stink hole of a tiny town.
