Because like most businesses these days, Walmart has a particular way they like to set up their stores. Not just any old big box will work with their "system".
Look at Walgreens, they do "the corner thing" for all of the new stores.
Everything is a "formula" these days "designed" to maximize branding and profits. They want you to recognize their stores by the look, feel and shape without the need of reading the signs.
But your point is still quite valid, why kill green space? Especially green space that would require significant landscaping to level it enough. Water drainage and all sorts of other issues come into play.
It reminds me a little of this idiotic "casinos must be in moats" nonsense.
We voters passed the "gambling boat" bill under the premise that gambling would be limited to excursion boats with loss limits. And the taxes made off the boats were suppose to go to schools. We know where that went!
Another boondoggle to help the rich get richer.
We use the Corp of Engineers to build levees so that good fertile farm land can become the stuff of developers "wet dreams"!
Now Walmart wants a tax break to "grace us" with one of their stores.
Hey, I want to open a frozen custard stand or a bar, can I get a tax break, TIF or some other corporate welfare deal too!
It seems these days if you have a lot of money like Walmart, you can get the rules bent and get tax breaks so you can accumulate even more money. But us poor working stiffs just keep getting lower wages and worse working hours and conditions.
When is the middle class going to wise up?
This is class warfare and we didn't start the war.
The enemy is not the immigrants, poor people on welfare, the liberals, the socialists, the college professors, the intellectuals or any of the other boogeymen being waved in our faces as the causes of our decline...the enemy are the people waving those boogeymen.
The Enemy is Complacency.
Middle class sit on their ass and don't fight back. That is wat "Occupy" is all about.
People are complacent and don't vote. You must Vote for and DEMAND representation for any of our elected officials.
When people are elected, they should represent us, not themselves. Vote them out, and replace them, but, you have to go to the polls to do that .
Complacency, has made us lazy and non productive.
We are our own worst enemies. Wake Up, Fight Back.

The Florissant City Council Passed walmart Monday night by a vote of 7-2. English and Hernendez voted no on the project. This Project ended up with no tax incentives which is good to make it a level playing field for all businesses that want to come to florissant. Now hopefully they can get started within the 180 day window, but I have a feeling construction is going to get started before the summer is over and after the Bridgeton walmart opens. I personally have nothing against walmart. They really have low prices on everything and buy up alot of items in order to sell at their low prices. This is a good investment for the city of florissant to do the right thing and finally allow them to come in. Kudos to the florissant city council to allow that to happen.

No bribes, and they sell junk. Be careful what you purchase. Wait until they close the stores in Ferguson it won't be long after the Florrisnat stores is open.

Largest retail employer in the US, and the world. Someone likes them, and they do provide benefits equal too or better than other retail businesses. Many of the employees have became very well off with the employee stock ownership program, some wealthy.
The new store in Florissant, just like all the other Walmart properties in St. Louis, will be built with 100% union labor, providing jobs for most of the trades, If you Boycott, you hurt the employees, not the store.
If you don't like Walmart, shop somewhere else.
Walmart is the result of consumers demanding lower prices.

Now, go shop at the Dollar Store.

If they're building it without using TIF or PUD, count your blessings and reap the full sales tax benefit that it will likely generate for your community.

If you're like other cities in America, you can certainly use the sales tax revenue to keep your city's financial health in better shape than it probably is now.

The Florissant City Council turned down the TIF and showed them reasons for not supporting a CID. So.... Walmart came anyway! Just watch after the build the crime, and loss of good paying jobs in North County will start to happen. Mom and Pop shops close. Thanks to the Councilmen that didn't support the Developement.

First, you have to understand the zoning laws and how they work. The property the Florissant Walmart is building on, was zoned commercial, and the council could not stop them. Walmart would have sued, and won, and cost the city many thousands of dollars. But, congratulations to Florissant for denying TIF and CID, which they did.
Last week, Ellisville, gave Walmart $15 million in TIF, and allowing them to tear down occupied apartments.
Florissant fought the good fight, and Ellisville, gave away the bank.

When will you walmart lovers wake up and realize what a detriment that evil empire is to our nation?
They are the biggest proponent for outsourcing our jobs and a big cause of illegal immigration.
And then to top it all off we hand a billion + corporation truckloads of tax breaks and money to build? More corporate welfare, yeah thats the answer.

Wake up and smell the treason!!!!!!

walmart has killed all of the small mom and pop places. what's worse is after they come in and take over the only place to work is there. take a look at whats happen in warrenton and troy areas, if you want a job the only place to work is walmart or mickey d's. it's a walmart world already. very sad.

I doubt the "mom and pop" stores would have survived in any metro area whether there were Walmart's or not. It would be great to go back to the old days where you personally knew everyone you dealt with, but those times are long gone.

As far as employment, no one is forced to work for a company that they feel treats them unfairly. Sure people need to work but most of us have had to take jobs we weren't happy with until something else came along. Walmart isn't "evil" it just reality and obviously what lots of citizens want.

Personally, I don't care for giant stores like Walmart and wouldn't shop there, but if someone else wants to, that's their choice. It might create some problems like traffic flow, but it would also bring in more tax money. And maybe give more choices to folks who have to literally watch every penny.

sorry to say, but, if the big giants, like Walmart, werent around, to keep volume costs down, non of us could afford to cost of goods and services.
The price of prosperity is not always an easy pill to swallow.
Consumers have demanded lower goods and services, and they are getting what they have asked for.

Walmart is one step closer to Reality.

One more council meeting should do it.
