why does florissant single out certain people for pit bulls? I have lived her for 15 years keep my house nice my yard nice and even have a kennel in my back yard but my old neighbors continue calling florissant on me because I rescues a very sweet pit bull who wouldnt hurt a fly now i am fined $200 and am told to remove her immediantly! when I see people walking pit bulls and see them in yards. I will not give her up to be destroyed at a shelter, I am now going to move out of florissant so I can keep my dog who has never bite anyone, but the old lady with the poodle next door who has bite the mailman twice, doesnt have to worry about a thing, I dont think its fair to just single out a breed.

If I were you I would see if you can find a lawyer willing to do pro-bono (free) work for you. If you can prove the pit bull is not aggressive maybe you can keep it there.
Then again, it is a law in Florissant that pit bulls are not allowed so you may not have a case. Doesnt hurt to try though. I agree, a single breed should not be singled out. Good luck

I didn't know that there was a pitbull ban. You have to understand WHY they did it though. There's all these black people moving in that think it makes them a tough guy to own pit bulls. You see them with 2 or 3 of them and they have no control over the animals. Have you ever seen the dead pits along interstate 70 north of the city? People hit these run aways all the time because black people like having them but don't take care of them. So you see....they're actually PROTECTING the breed from shitty ass people. You're right however...I've met plenty of nice pit bulls that just wanna lick your face all day.
Moving over a dog is SILLY...you'll just lose money. Why not give it to someone that will take good care of the dog that has plenty of space for him/her to run around?

It is when the breed has a tendency to be a very vicious dog...The poodle is easier to fight off than a pit bull...The law has been in effect for 5 years. If you see others with it, call on them. If you had a pit prior to the law, you were suppose to be grandfathered in and simply could not get anymore, so I am going to assume you got her after the law was passed-which was illegal. Call the rescues and see if you can find one to take her or a foster home.

Some people single out animals however they let cruds like the one who spoke at the council meeting go anywhere they want. I would much rather have a pit bull that some dude that hasn't had a bath around me. There should be a ban on cruds! Or maybe a take a bath ordinance.( no dogs allowed?)

The Home Owners insurance companies really pushed the bans on pit bulls. The numbers seem to indicate that certain breeds, such as pit bulls, have aggressive tempers and hard to control. Many municipalities picked up and put in bans......

Ordinance was passed in 2005....all those registered in the city at that time were grandfathered in...no new pits after that date. Dec. 12, 2005.

If you rent, and you have a pit bull and would like to keep it, I suggest moving.

I've been in my house since 2003. We acquired our dog from a no-kill shelter, late 2002. She was about 12 weeks old when we got her. Last year, the same thing happened to us. We were told to get rid of her. I fought, and fought and fought, espcially after hearing about the Grandfather rule. Unfortunately, Florissant wouldn't accept it, because she wasnt registered as a "pit bull" prior to the ban. She was registered as a Stafordshire Mix, because she was 100% pit bull. This wasnt acceptable for them. We also tried hiring an attorney, to no avail. We had our dog for 7 years, and had to send her to Stray Rescue. We lost a member of our family, because lets be honest here, I'm not up and selling my house because of an animal. It sucks, it REALLY does. But - thats the chance you take when you move anywhere. The more rural areas do not have bans. Try moving there.

And let me just say that just because the breed has a history of being agressive, doesnt mean they all are. Ours definitely wasnt. But it takes a few asshole owners who think its a great idea to have a fighting dog. Whatever... the owners are the ones who should be banned from Florissant. I'd vote for that bill in a heartbeat.

Stafordshire Mix is a completely ligitimate breed. What the hell do they think a pit bull is?
You're absolutely right...the ones that were brought up in violence are violent and the ones that come up in loving homes just want to lick you all day and play.
It's a shame that rap music made these dogs "popular".

Poo Taco you're right and that was our argument as well. Stafordshire Terrior IS a pit bill. Try explaining that to Florissant Health AND the board members. They didnt care.

It kills me that people think its okay to stereotype pit bulls as violent, but its not okay to stereotype black people as violent... The VIOLENT Black people are the ones that own the VIOLENT pit bulls.

Just sayin...(and before I get bashed...I'm mixed and half blank thank you very much...)

Well in that sense you could describe everyone or EVERYTHING as violent...Are horses violent?...not usually, unless you smack the shit out of it. It might get violent then. I bet if I piss off an Irish setter...it would bite me. Hey..how about cats? Maybe if I pull on it's tail it might scratch me...we should BAN CATS TOO!

This is the easy way for government to say they are protecting us.
Bull terriers are very strong and protective,so when the are on the bad side, like all dogs can be, they do some damage. Most are really good dogs if raised right.
If existing violent dog laws were properly enforced, they would not need to be banning breeds.

take it up with the city council. if enough people want the Pit Bull ban lifted, they can get it done.

Take your cause to the podium.

well that's a double edged sword..I don't know if I want the ban lifted...just enforced differently. Owners of dangerous breeds should probably carry insurance on the dog. That way any damage they cause would be paid for...A licensing system probably wouldn't be bad either. Somone to make sure you have proper containment and environment.

the owner of a vicious animal that causes harm, should be held as accountable as someone who mishandles a fire arm, or drives recklessly, or DWI, or any other mean crime.

Mean and vicious dogs are dangerous and should be treated accordingly, and the owners held accountable.

There have been many innocent people injured, hurt and killed by vicious animals, and the owners thought they were fine.

I 100% Agree!!!!

And taking it to the city council does no good, and lets be honest, its not worth the fight, and we just threw our money away hiring an attorney. We ended up getting a beagle instead and our family is just as happy.
