Syracuse mother learns of son's fatal football injury online
A mother who says she first saw on Facebook that her son had died of a head injury during an upstate New York football game believes authorities should do a better job notifying people during emergencies.

Well, the boy's primary emergency contacts were his grandmother (presumably paternal) and his father.
So it appears that the parents are seperated and the father has custody of the boy. Or at least the boy gave the info to his coaches and excluded his mom.
If the mom is upset, it should be with her husband and his family for not calling her right away or within hours of the incident.
Too bad she had to learn about it on Facebook, but in this age of social networking and immediate news, they work much faster than authorities following procedure and using phones or direct contact. You will not be able to stop students or even adults from Tweeting or posting Facebook updates even in poor taste or without regard to victim's family just so they can say they got info first.
