New covered bridge lifted into place

Webster patrols the west side of Mill Creek where Zachrich Construction employees work to place a 274-ton, 125-foot-long covered bridge over Mill Creek near the intersection of Mill and Thompson roads. Full Story

The bridge is gigantic. It looks gaudy and tacky. Still, in my opinion, a totally unnecessary project and waste of money.

Have been watching the progress on this bridge. Had no idea it was going to be a covered bridge. It is SPECTACULAR! Very beautiful and an engineering feat to behold.

My feelings are mixed. I'm glad a few folks got work here, but what is next for them? Not everyone can or should be expected to work construction jobs in this recovery.I also feel that the cover is not necessary unless it would be a tourist draw, movie set, etc.

Be reminded that Pres O pitched another 50 billion infrastructure project today, but there is still 257 billion in unspent stimulus funds. The belly is full over the record spending to save this economy.

Granted, it is pretty, but all that glitters...

I am a covered bridge enthusiast. I think that the projected lifespan of the bridge pays for itself. The bridges are only on low traffic roads and provide scenic character.

Twice as many people could have worked on 2 bridges to make travel safer and more convenient for what was spent on the extravagant structure. In tough times infrastructure needs attention but not with "pet projects" at ridiculous costs.

I live on this road and have been watching the progress all summer/fall.
I would really like to know what this bridge cost us, honestly. It is a gigantic, gorgeous covered bridge, that no one is going to go across. Glad it gave a few people a job for 9 mos, but really, was it worth it?? I think we all know the answer to that one...

The old iron truss bridge was not built in the 1950's, it was built in 1913, making it 97 years old when it was demolished. It was completely restored in 1994-95 and rated at full capacity. In other words, there was nothing wrong with it other than it was one lane wide. You could actually see the creek from the iron truss bridge, you can't see the creek at all from the new covered bridge.

I just saw the new bridge today and let me tell you it is very impressive. But, it seems a bit out of place compared to the quaint little bridge that was there. The people who drive on this low traffic road are definitely spoiled now. But i think everyone will have mixed reviews about it.
