Wal-Mart's convenience isn't worth price to psyche

There are 6 comments on the Orlando Sentinel story from Mar 25, 2007, titled Wal-Mart's convenience isn't worth price to psyche. In it, Orlando Sentinel reports that:

The recent article on the opening of the Wal-Mart Supercenter on the far outskirts of Deltona failed to mention the fact that not all area residents share in that "delight." As a longtime Osteen resident, I ...

Everyone should learn from the mistakes of Orange County. I had thought that at one time, there was a moritorium of building in the area but I guess that was two County Mayors ago.

Are you willing to pay higher taxes so that you buy up the vacant land so that it is not developed. If not, it seems kind of selfish that you make an arbitrary decision about someone else's property after you have already developed yours. I am all in favor of having more vacant land myself, but I believe that if we truly want this, we have to make some sacrifices ourselves.

As I share some the views and beliefs this really comes down to the major issue of “not in my backyard”. Driving 15 to 20 minutes had so many benefits. However I’m sure the residents of Orange City or Sanford probably said the same thing a few years back when the big box stores started opening close to someone else’s homestead. Lets be honest, Central Florida for the most part 20 years ago was undeveloped land.

Now that I have claimed my little corner of the world I tell my wife all the time that they should stop people from moving into Florida. There are just too many people here and the traffic isn’t getting any better. I certainly don’t want to see anymore development behind me in “my” backyard. By the way, I wouldn’t mine seeing a steakhouse preferably Long Horn built in the area it’s my favorite restaurant, but not to close I don’t want to have to deal with the traffic or problems it will bring.

As someone who commutes to Orlando from Deltona daily, I have seen the change that led to a Wal-Mart (and future development) in Deltona. What's sad about it is that a way of life is being erased. The properties along SR415 in the area were pastureland with horses. Now they all seem to have for sale signs with "Zoned Commercial" on them. Growth happens, and we can't always stop it, but we need to make sure that growth is done responsibly. Introducing sprawl into the area will not enhance anyone's quality of life. In fact, it's already had a detrimental effect on mine, as the increased traffic and new traffic light for Wal-Mart have increased my commute time.

Volusia county does not need to emulate Orange county and develop every acre of open space. The western side of Deltona is the place for growth, as that abuts to both I-4 and Orange City. Developing that side of town would allow both Osteen and eastern Deltona a reprieve from "convenience" that does little to make anyone's lives better.

I purposely moved out to Deltona from Orlando to avoid traffic. After 6 years, it appears that everything from Orlando has followed me. Driving to Orange City was not the worst thing in the world. It was a 15 min drive, and I couldn't believe how many people complain about it. Admittedly, this new Walmart is pretty nice, and its about 10 minutes closer to my house, but the increased traffic in my area has already ticked me off. We plan to move...again. I'm thinking the only place we can get any peace and quiet is North Dakota, but my husband has issues with temps under 75.
