Wow, so much has changed. We used to live in apts on Siesta Key for next to nothing. Work in town and go back to the beach in the evening. Of course, working folks have been run off the beach in recent years. All we had was Siesta Market on one end and Crescent on the other.

Its all about the wealthy and the tourist trade now. The native Floridians and the hard working individuals can not even afford to live in sarasota/
Keep Sarasota beautiful...wow they did such a good job they got rid of all the regular people.

Folks today will never know the simple life we lived on Siesta Key 20- 30 years ago. You didn't have to be rich. A young person today will never have a chance to experience what living on the beach is like. Even back then, I knew what we had was very special. Sarasota 1980-2001

I think JBS was on the right side of the trail while heading south- south of a 'night club', I think there was some criminality going on there if my memory is correct

lots of great places are gone

The Patio
Ruby Tuesday's (not the rest)
Upstairs at Charlie's Crab
The Brown Derby, lol

Rip Van Winkle's, lol
The DownUnder Jazz Bar
In Extremis
The BoatHouse
Bob's BoatHouse
Poseidon

and a ton of others I can't remember, but do remember the locations!

how about the Crown House and Lester's Diner? I was a kid back then but I could always get a meal for a couple of bucks at many places in Sarasota. Remember the Windjammer at 41/Siesta Drive?
I'll never forget stopping at Simple Sams grocery store before going over the bridge to Siesta Key. Dottie was the cashier. Good memory, huh?

Does anyone know the history of the former Simple Sam's Market on the corner of Osprey and Siesta Drive? The sign for the current strip mall which replaced it as "Simple Sam Plaza" has an icon at the top of a stick-like figure, presumably Simple Sam himself. What I want to know is, was there ever such a person? Maybe what they used to call a "village idiot" who hung around there and eventually had a market named for him. It's a nice story, anyway.

I remember the Windjammer's carrot & raisin salad, Bloody Marys @ Davey Jones Locker. The Three Crowns out on Lido and the Azure Tides beach bar. Tail 'O The Pup, The Inn Between. Great memories. I even remember when the Crow's Nest in Venice was a real tavern.

That was a grocery store. It had full grocery line and deli. It was a landmark so they kept the sign. We had alot of colorful characters in town but not sure if Simple Sam was a real person.

Does anybody remember a small club near the Sarasota airport from like the mid 80's called Bombers or something like that? It was right next to the runways and as you drove in it had a bunch of surplus stuff from World War II in front of it, like a jeep and I think it even had a plane! Lol any help would be cool

The Bomb Squadron! I played minor league baseball in Sarasota in the mid-80s and we went to that place all the time. Some of us lived on Siesta Key at the Sea Club 2, 5955 Midnight Pass Rd. Brown Derby was my favorite eating spot, always got the Captain's Platter. Haven't been down there since '83..bet I wouldn't know Sarasota know! Gotta come for a visit!

yeah, the Squadron was a lot of fun really, and not bad food, not great, but interesting they just torn down the old building and I think the airport authority actually may own the land now, but nothing's on it which I think is a bit strange, but these days, with its close close proximity to the actual perimeter fence separating the access ramps to the runway, I bet, nobody could get permission and FAA approval to build ANYTHING THAT close to a ramp/runway, given the security climate today since Sept 2001 - a real shame though - the only entity buying up property in that immediate area is The Univ of South Florida, and New College expansion !
Don't know if anyone mentioned The Magic Moment ?? on Siesta back in the day
Even Bennigan's in s 41 is gone ! lol great happy hour
The Holiday Inn on n 41 - whitfield area - with the marina was fun,now it's sort of garbage and it's another name
Ruby Tueday's (not the awful resto) on St. Armand's
bistro 41, s Trail - excellent French food ! small place, west side of trail near the old Oyster Bar - hmmm mid 80's ??
The Armand Inn..on Lido - gone lol late 78-79-80 ?
Zacchinni's on 12th...then the Dugout ?? near the stadium - great sandwiches but a dump
Walt's , DT SRQ on 301/Washington 2 blocks north of Fruitville, east side of the road - GONE, but a great place for lunch and cocktails back in the day
GEORGE's !! ah yes, downtown, first floor of condo building I think us 41 and Palm - super, super upscale dining, valet parking, super service, piano etc ! maybe late 79, 80, 83 one of the best damn resto when really I was just a kid
Darryl's ?? near the Sarasota Square Mall
Forest Hill country Club- back in the day ! lol Wednesday nights
L'Auberge du bon Vivant - LBK - excellent maybe to the early 90's ???
Poseidon - ditto - super food
The Bucanneer LBK - awful food but good for boat arrival
Rip Van winkle - sucked, but hey, it's bowling
Daffy's menswear
OLD HEIDELBERG CASTLE ! on 301, dt SRQ neat Walt's ...the WORST DAMN German food (or any other kind) in the world, but they packed the place for unknow reason for YEARS ..try 1977-1979/80 ??
AWFUL

This was called the 306 Bomb Group and they had headphones where you caould actually hear the runway traffic from the airport. It was very cool and romantic because it was so dark!
