I never before realized how prejudiced the Salavation Army was, or how narrow-minded, paternalistic and dictorial they were. They helped my family so much in the 1950's-60's, and I've given much to them over the years. No More! This situation is over the top and something I will never support.

The officer knew that Salvation Army officers ministers)in the USA must marry officers. He knew it and was sworn to follow the regulation to adhere to it. He then chose not to follow it. He also disobeyed his supervisory officers, and their are other allegations regarding his administration that are a serious breach of conduct unbecoming an officer. The Salvation Army is right in its decision and the officer is wrong. People should praise The Salvation Army for sticking to its high principles, not condemn them. The organization has my full support.

Knowing the history of The Salvation Army Johnny knew that the women he would want to marry would either have to be a Salvation Army officer or be willing to become one. I believe that he knew what he was doing when he went to the media. If he loves the salvation army as much as he says he does why would he drag the name through the mud

Lori,

I totally agree with your comment. It seems strange that Johnny didn't discuss the matter with The Salvation Army at the outset of his engagement. I believe he handled the whole matter in the wrong way, so it is no wonder things didn't go his way. He knew better, but
chose to ignore the regulations he was sworn to follow. It was an internal matter and might have had a better ending. He could have stepped down from officership and remained an employee in some capacity and even married. Now, he won't even be employed or reaccepted as an officer.

Johnny Harsh never said if he had gone to his superiors at the beginning of his relationship with Cia. He didn't say his fiancee wanted to be considered for soldiership then officership. All Salvation Army officers come from the rank of soldier. Such a process being a lengthy one. Johnny knew the rules about officer marriage, but chose not to follow them. Officers are leaders and are to follow regulations, obey them and maintain discipline which he did not do. Did Johnny and Cia approach Salvation Army leaders first before they "blindsided" the organization. Had Johnny made Cia aware of the rules and persuaded her to follow them, this whole thing might not have happened. I believe he went about it all wrong. Do we know that that Cia planned to be a soldier or didn't she? If Johnny wanted to marry a non-officer, he should have stepped down, sought an employee's position or that of a non-commissioned minister. He was terminated for other offenses that he failed to discuss with the media. The Salvation Army maintains its high principles which is to be respected.

Yoley,

How come in every media interview, Johnny did not come out and say Cia wanted to become a soldier and then an officer? Had he told the media or was it left out of the interviews? Did Johnny discuss the matter of Cia's plan for soldiership with his supervisors before Cia had planned an engagement or after? By the way, Johnny is not the only Salvation Army officer widowed with school age children. There are other widowed officers and their children who obeyed regulations and continued to follow their calling.

Yoley,

If you think that I'm stupid, that's fine. You wouldn't be the first who said so. I realize you lost your mother and that is tough enough for anyone. You are grieving the loss of your mother and your family is facing major adjustments right now. I can understand your sense of hurt and anger. But, I somehow do not believe it is the fault of The Salvation Army that brought your family to this place. Some of the actions taken by your father has certainly not helped and he is accountable. As far as indicating Major Thompson to be a liar, I would disagree. A Divisional Commander of The Salvation Army is usually selected on the basis of having integrity and intelligence. I would find it difficult to believe that he was stupid or a liar. He would not be in that position of authority if he were.

I have always loved the Salvation Army and all the good they do for people. I also realize they are a religious organization and their officers are ordained ministers, who have agreed to follow Salvation Army regulations. That being said, here are some things that show what kind of man Mr. Harsh is:
*He willfully disobeyed his leaders & neglected his pastoral duties
*On the part about the fiance staying in the Salvation Army owned house - the Bible tells us to abstain from the appearance of evil - doesn't he understand the Book he's supposed to be preaching from?
*He is an accused thief - there's money missing from church collections and he charged personal purchases to Salvation Army credit cards - that's called embezzlement.
*Question: How does a man's wife die at the end of June and then has a fiance by October?
The Salvation Army made the right decision and more than ever, I respect the organization.

I came acrosse this info on Capt. Johnny Harsh by accident. I knew the Capt. when he was in Kansas, before going to Wisconsin. The community loved Capts Johnny & Yoley. His family was well respected. I had the wonderful opportunity of working with him as his secretary. He was fantastic, and because of that, the community was generous to the Salvation Army. He also had a wonderful board of directors. After he was transferred, the Salvation Army lost alot of support, and the board suffered the loss of its members. The new Capts, at that time, were not well-liked by the community. Having said that, I wish capt. Johnny all the happiness in the world. He, and his family, are well deserving of whatever joy comes into their life.
