My aunt told me that it had burnt down. Is this true.

Yes, the Greenbush tavern burnt down on May 27. Hopefully they'll be rebuilding. But not likely in time for any of the 2006 season.

Jim Nolan (my ex-husband)(my children's dad) is letting everyone
know that the Greenbush Tavern owners have already started the process of rebuilding. Jim & Ed are hoping to be back in business soon. We are all very thankful that no one was killed or hurt. Jim, Ed's son Blake and Jim's step-daughter Lindsay all slept in the attached apartment that Friday night. If the fire would have started during the night all three would have never made it out alive. We were all devistated with those frantic phone calls that day and I know their customers that had had reservations that day were horrified as they approached the building. Jim and Ed were touched by all the sympathetic calls from family, friends and customers. The Tavern will be known for it's good pizza again. The Greenbush Tavern isn't only a resturant, it's a tradition. |

Thanks for all the info. I was up there cutting grass for our yearly family camp out. I stopped by. Maybe Jim can get some help from the local nonprofit groups to do fish fries and hotdogs or something else to help. I live in Detroit and would like to help. If I hear about somthing in enough time I would like to come and help. My family has owned property in Greenbush since the 1970's. When I talk to people about the little town I am surprized at how many people know the Tavern. Good luck Jim and I pray that you will be able to open again. I plan on stopping by to talk to you.

I'm sorry to say that the Greenbush Tavern is not
going to be rebuilt. One owner wanted to rebuild and the other did not. I visited the area last week and was very sad to see such a great restaurant come to such a sad end. It will truely be missed. I visited the area last weekend. Everyone I talked to wished that Jim would rebuild. My daughter and I sifted though some of the rubble last weekend and found a Bob Seger CD in the jukebox that survived. The name of the CD- "The Fire Inside". Maybe it's an omen. If everyone sends letters asking Jim to rebuild maybe he'll find a way. He has a post office box at the Greenbush post office. |

Condos anyone? Greenbush and Oscoda could do so much better.

I also would like to see the Greenbush Tavern return. I went there to have dinner many times and enjoyed those times there immensely. Now its just another loss that our town is experiencing. Things around here don't seem to be changing for the better, do they?

I was the Dj at the Greenbush Tavern, and it broke my heart the day it burned down. It wasnt just a bar or resturant, It was a place where everyone was friends, and family. I would love to see it rebulit.

I hope they find a way to rebuild this landmark.
Without it another piece of local culture is lost. Please no condos in Alcona County! Unless they build them West of US 23! |

WE WANT GREENBUSH BACK!!!!!
OBVISLY THEY WOULD STILL GET GOOD BUSINESS, SO Y NOT RE-BULID???? PROTEST!!!!!!!!!! |

My dad actually lives across Van Ettan Lake from Wurtsmith Air Force Base. I heard that they tore down many of the living spaces and built condos. There are many small businesses still on the base, but I believe the airfield is mostly used for large airliner jets that come in to get repaired by one of the companies on the base. |

Met my wife at the Greenbush Tavern. We met there on St Patrick's day in 1991. She was on a blind date with an obnoxious guy and she asked to sit at our table. I was there with my little brother. He had come up to get me out of the house; I lost a wife in 1990 to cancer and was really burying myself in work (Wurtsmith) and misery (grieving). He took me to Greenbush first and it was sort of dead at the time. He then took me to a nightclub across from the base gate on the highway. He liked it, but it was too noisy for me. I asked if he would like to go back to the Greenbush.
We ended back there and the band was just starting to play. We sat there drinking some coolers when this young lady at a table of 8 or so people turned to us and asked if she could sit with us. I said sure. We have now been married over 16 years and been together 17 this March 17th. We used to return to the Greenbush at least once a year for the Friday fish fry. It is sad that it is gone, but we have many memories there that are still much alive. We still go up north around March 17th and stop at the site. The last time, Cathy took a photo of me lying on the ground next to the tile that spells out greenbush. Does anyone still have a greenbush t-shirt or sweatshirt? That might be a great gift for her. My wife and I were married at the state park up the road and had our reception in the Tavern 9/17/2005. We were the 3rd generation and our kids would have been of the 4th generation of Hyland's to frequent the place (with one generation of Jones' before that!). Such a shame but still great memories from my earliest days till the best day of my life.
We'll miss the (Greenbush) Tavern, From before Prohabition till May of -06... RIP! Scott Hyland |
