unlicensed mechanics should get fined or jail time the state wont enforce the law because they dont have the time and its the common people that suffer
Really??? What about all the people out there that are on a fixed income or can't afford the high premium labor and parts cost of taking to a shop (that may also recommend repairs they don't need)???
These people look for a reputable and affordable unlicensed and non certified mechanic.

Some people just don't have the disposable income to dump money into a costly repair at a moments notice. And they need to get to work to afford the cost living.

Yea just throw everyone in jail. That's the answer. Now taxes will go up to pay for facilities to house, clothed, feed, and have staff to watch and administer them.

Real smart.

One of the things I notice about a shop type enviorment is that they juggle cars & jobs. So if they charge for 3 hours there's a good chance they only spent an hour or two on it. To top it off how can all mechanics be worthy of the ASE hourly rate when some are slow, incompetent or a crook. Yet they feel entitled to that rate. This is why customers get upset with mechanics and others charging money for something that didn't work or come in on schedule. And yes the ASE mechanic can price themselves out of the market if they haven't already.

How much would you charge a friend (jobless) for 8/9 hr tuneup/head gasket replacement on an old Nissan 1.6L as an unlicenced auto guy..? I assisted w light etc. today was about 4 hrs to check timing belt and then remove head to find problem. tmrw will be 2-3 hrs putting it back together and tuning it. the other day was 3 hrs tuneup and compression test.. I got 85 nissan wagon free after my probes tranny died-from his gfs (my nest friend) uncle. we haven't discussed repayment.. turned out to be more than just a tuneup or belt adjustment but just a failed gasket. and we left the exhaust manifold on.
If "my friend" was unemployed and seeking and could afford at least the parts and need some help or guidance doing the job him/herself then I wouldn't charge a thing. Maybe they can treat me to dinner or drinks when they could afford it.
You should have to "tune" after a head gasket replacement. Just make sure the cam and crank pulleys are on the timing marks before removing anything. Helps to use a stencil or whiteout to make marks on the timing belt also so the notches match up on the cogs on the pulleys when reinstalling the timing belt.

I did a customers VW Golf 1.8 head gasket, flange/thermostat, and heater core for about $600 labor only because you have to take the whole dash out to remove the heater core.

That's why I stick with auto tech and not bother with the others.

They also have unlicensed people if they own their own shop they higher who ever they want but the people do small things to gain experience. I believe it is good for people to learn a little thats how they become auto techs.. and if they dont do the job correctly they do it until its perfect and checked .
