Word has it that another steel plant in the area is expected to make an expansion announcement soon. Growth, jobs, activity, we must be doing something right.

There is a new mill being built at the moment between Maverick and JMS that is suppose to hire about 100 people. It's about half way finished.....maybe a little more. I haven't had to haul material there for a month or so, so I'm not sure how far allong they are. It will be a pipe mill like Maverick.

Last I heard, from a friend that works for them, Ipsco is suppose to built a structural steel mill next to their current one, but I have no idea when they are suppose to start.

Actually, Blytheville and Mississippi County has been experiencing good news for the past 5 years concerning manufacturing jobs. The state has lost about 20000 mfg jobs since Oct 02. Fort Smith alone has lost over 2000 in their city. The state total loss for 05 to 06 was 4848 mfg jobs. Mississippi County has had a net increase of around 1500. Most of these jobs are through plant expansions. It is unfortunate, but when an existing industry adds 30 jobs, the news is kind of lost in the media.

Oh, I agree. Things have progressed since I moved back to the area five years ago. It seemed like every fourth house was up for sale, and that just isn't the case anymore. Lots of nice things going on with the local steel industry, and you know things are looking better when you get big box retail (Lowe's) coming in as well as some new food/entertainment options (Zaxby's, Capn Deez, Starbucks, Movie Gallery, etc).

Blytheville is still playing catch-up IMO and that's all too often an uphill battle. Business CLOSURES are being ignored, even if just within a 5-year period. How many small businesses have opened but also closed? Then there is the loss of population.
ONE movie rental store in the entire town? Possibly in that case, TV and other new options make a difference, especially with a discretionary commodity. How many did there used to be?
Lowe's is probably the best addition so far as it provides such a large selection of "maintenance" items; a nearby SUSTAINING provider. Which retailer in town has the most traffic? I'd say Wal-Mart. Again, directly and conveniently addressing necessities. Every smaller town seems to have a Dollar General Store, including the west side of Blytheville and Gosnell. I'm guessing Sav-A-Lot probably looked at Gosnell as Lowe's did the Missouri bootheel as far as potential customers go.
Manufacturing has to look at transportation which IS available. Thing is, the area also has a ready made AIR option that somehow isn't coming into the mix. Memphis probably reached the saturation point with both passenger and freight traffic early on.
PIZO needs furnace residue for their operation and that is available here. It would be interesting to see why Jonesboro got the plants they did, or even Osceola, Paragould, etc.
There will be a big job fair in Jonesboro tomorrow. Wonder how many county employers will be represented, as well as having to look beyond the immediate area on an ongoing basis. Inversely, how many Blytheville residents work out of town and doing what?

They were waiting till after the election. They would have announced the new mill if Romey was elected. Now the mill will be built in another country. To save money on regulations.

If osceola wants a steel mill let them pay for it themselves. The north and west side of the county arent buying into this with Chitwood and Kennemore involved. The case is closed.Chitwood has already screwed us with ART and Becker.
