He lived in Osceola in the late 80's or early 90's if I recall correctly. I believe he may have been the Plant Manager at that time. He was tragically gunned down yesterday in a church shooting in Knoxville, TN. It's been all over the Memphis news as well as on the national news. I talked to Greg on several occasions during that time frame when I lived in Osceola. He was a very nice man and I was very saddened by the news. My heart-felt sympathy is with his family at this time.

Yes I remember Greg really well. He was a very nice gentleman, and it is wierd because just last week I was looking through my recipes and found a recipe Greg had given me for Vidalia Onion Relish. He loved to eat. My condolences goes out to his wife Barbara and the boys. Such a sad situation, but by what they said on the news he is being labeled a HERO because he stepped in front of the gunman and saved a lot of lives.

I knew Greg very well, when I worked in the office. I liked him as a friend and boss. It does not surprise me that he would jump in front of someone to save others, I am sure he was trying to get the shot gun. I only met Barbara a couple of times, she was very nice. My condolences to the family.

Greg did indeed serve as the plant manager of the Osceola Arkansas plant at Viskase Corporation in that timeframe.

Greg later worked out of the Chicago offices and plant of Viskase. That is where I had occasion to make his acquaintance on a limited basis, and by accounts was a most likeable individual. Greg was well respected for his knowledge of the Viskase production processes and product formulations.

During both his Osceola and Chicago Viskase assignments, Greg's family remained in Knoxville, while Greg commuted home to Knoxville every weekend to be with them. It was my understanding that Greg's wife had a business venture in Knoxville and wished to retain it and to also remain a resident of that area given family ties there. So it's also likely that many long-time Northwest Airline employees will recognize Greg as well.

In addition, it is also very likely that many long-time Osceola residents will recognize Greg for another reason. He worked in the local grocery store to fill in the time while away from his Knoxville home and family (and I suspect to defray the weekly airfare costs between Memphis and Knoxville) during his tenure at Osceola's Viskase plant.

Current and former Viskase employees alike can be proud that one of our own acted in the highest and most unselfish ways.

I certainly hope President Bush will be petitioned to bestow upon Greg McKendry our nation's highest civilian honor for fallen heroes.
