Why is Maine in the wrong time zone?

With the state of Maine getting way too dark early and having the sun come up too early doesn't it make sense that Maine obviously belongs in the Atlantic Time Zone? Also it would match more it's coastal feel. Since Maine is on the East Coast the automatically assume that we need to rise and shine with NYC for business purposes. But if you stop looking at a map and look at an actual GLOBE you will clearly see without a shadow of a doubt that Maine is technically in the Atlantic Time Zone. With the possible exception of anything far west in Maine. It sucks in the Winter to have 40 minutes less like than other states and in the summer see the sun coming up at 4am instead of 5am. I also think this causes psychological problems because it is totally unnatural to place Maine in the Eastern Time Zone. So why in 2012 haven't people smartened up???

I agree Maine is in the wrong time zone but I think it has more to do with business on the entire Eastern side of the country. Maine would be singled out a lot apart from business in the NY Stock Exchange or like on New Years Maine would celebrate New Years 1 hour earlier. Though I do think that being in the wrong time zone Maine has negative effects on people. For example it gets much much darker earlier in Maine (even more son in Mid to Eastern Maine) than most Eastern states, the extra darkness is not good for seasonal depression. It is also annoying in the summer when the sun comes up 1 hour earlier than other states as well. It's weird to visit Maine in the summers and see the light peaking over the horizon at 3:30am even though the technical sun rise is indicated much later it is vastly apparent that the sun comes up much too early in Maine. In studies it shows that exposure to too much early light increases the risk of insomnia and/or more frequent sleepless nights. Though in this case it would mean being robbed of that hour of sleep that most other Americans on the Eastern side would normally get. Even in cities like Portland that are more towards the west part of Maine and is located more in aignment with other Eastern states it is technically true that 90%(if not more) of Maine is actually and scientifically within the Atlantic time zone. Personally I would opt to have Maine placed in the Atlantic time zone mostly for mental health reasons. Being in the wrong time zone might also account for the "higher than national average of suicide rates in Maine" due to seasonal depression being much worse. Maine is also noted to have "the worst prescription drug abuse problem in the nation." which may also be due to the increase of major depression due to it being extremely dark in Maine in the afternoons during winter. In the summer it is also rather bizzare to see the sun come up so extremely early compared to other states. Placing Maine in the correct (Atlantic) Time Zone would most likely benefit Maine not only with depression but productivity as well. And basically young folks don't want to put up with the nonsense of darker days in which the sun sets and 40 minutes to 1 solid hour earlier than everybody else. These kids would rather move elsewhere. It's part of the brain drain problem and the loss of even unskilled labor that move out to find work in more hospitable states.
