Are all those in the same dialect? I am out of touch with the language part of things, that's true. I was merely making an observation. Why do people feel they have to prove they are more in touch with their culture than others? I am in touch with my culture but am willing to admit that I have a lot to learn. Why is it always a matter of "I know more than those other Indians"? I do thank you for the info and certainly apologize for any offense clearly made.

well now you see why no one would answer "curious" everyone has their own interputation of a meaning. The Maidu language was not a written language. Anyone can come up with a translation. Example...Pakan'yani could also mean " people who threw springs in marsh"
No offense intended Brandy 32.

It is quotes such as the one above that is damaging to the public's understanding of the Maidu people. Pakan'yani has a definite meaning because it refers to a definite geographical location of the Pakan'Yani Maidu (people). And I am certain that the Pakan'Yani Band of Maidu Indians know exactly where that location is. So Pakan'Yani can be inerpreted as either a marsh or springs on the mountain but the location is not open for interpretation.

Sorry if you were offended.

That's one of the most ignorant things I've ever heard! We have enough restaurants, but you wouldn't stop someone from opening another one. We have enough grocery stores, but you wouldn't stop someone from opening another one.

This is America! If someone wants to open a new business, then they should go ahead and open a new business. If you don't like what that business is, then don't go there, or move to a communist country where the government can decide what they (and you!) have to do for a living.

We already have enough casinos in the region. Enterprise should find a different economic development strategy for their members.

Measure G was only an advisory measure, nothing more. Enterprise has every right to continue pursuing their casino.

The casino issue was put to a vote in Yuba County and it was NOT passed...If the majority voted no, then that should be honored as the will of the people. It seems that when the majority vote for or against something a lot of the time it is fought over. It was voted on, did not win & should be left at that.

Estom means middle in Maidu. The Native people of Central California. Yumeka or Yamane has to do with mountains. Middle mountains are the Sutter Buttes.

There are MANY dialects of Maidu. Just look in the Maidu Texts and Dictionary by William F. Shipley. UC Publications in linguistics Vol.33.1963. mountain (Yamane) Maidu, Nisenan Maidu and Concow or (Kooincawi) Maidu are different languages of Maidu but it gets more site specific even than that. As someone else mentioned language has a time and place. Our American ears do not hear so good. We Anglify everything. So Kooingawi becomes Kooincawi becomes Concow.

"The tribe has reservation land, but the land is not suitable for a casino because it is remote and inaccessible, and parts of it go underwater when Lake Oroville reservoir is full. The tribe also has other reservation land in Butte County, but it is a graveyard, and the tribe doesn’t want to build a casino on it."
Is it Estom Yumeka or Histum Yani?

Have been reading all the comments about the
Enterprise Rancheria and the others. Speaking
of burial ground, would you have Enterprise have a floating cacino on Lake Oroville? Because that is where the enterprise is, covered by lake Oroville.

The following is a statement by disenrolled Enterprise Rancheria tribal members:

"The basis for our land appeal filed at the Interior Board of Indian Appeals is the fact that the descendants of Enterprise Rancheria No. 2, which was sold and terminated by an Act of Congress (HR11562) in 1964, when the Oroville Dam was built, were allowed in by the Bureau of Indian Affairs in 1994, to obtain funding and services using our federal recognition and the land base of Enterprise No.1, our Great Grandmother's land."

It is true that Enterprise Rancheria No. 2 is "covered by lake Oroville". But the 40 acres of trust land that constitute Enterprise Rancheria No. 1 are soaking in the sunshine above Lake Oroville and there are tribal members currently residing there.

What tribe are you an elder of?

I would strongly oppose the development of any Casino related evils that is being exploited by the fast talking New York City accountants and lawyers trying to exploit whatever is left off of the Indian tribes. First they got us hooked on whiskey and now its the gambling evil. Almost all tribal casino are corrupt and a great majority of its benefit goes to non-Indians. Tribal Councils that manages and signs documents on behalf of its tribes are extremely corrupt and hoarding millions in conspiracy with its masters, the Casino financiers and their bean counters. So let's develop some green projects on Indian land and do something positive for our tribe as well as for the country. There are hundreds of millions of federal dollars available for Green energy and green projects. It not only help the tribe for its employment but would secure a better future for all.

Wow, out of all the nasty posts on here how did you pick mine as worthy of a lecture? I absolutely agree with you by the way. I was simply responding to another's post about language, there was no racism or hatred in my post and I didn't say anything at all about welfare.

Don't hate on our tribe just because yours has lost its traditions to Meth and alcoholism. Get your shit together and attend a meeting; if your tribe even has meetings.
