We need to clean this town up first of all.....
Make it a place that people want to come to......
Clean up the junk that is everywhere. Enforce the codes that are already on the books~!
THEN, maybe someone would actually WANT to come live here.

In the military stationing plans, movement of people to an area is usually accompanied by or preceded by a determination of housing availability and even the building of more military family housing on the installation. Judging by the proximity of Las Cruces to White Sands, I would expect them to be the likely choice for new military personnel no housed on White Sands. In El Paso, housing is not usually a problem because single personnel often live on post and family housing has been contracted out with nearly new quarters available. I agree with the writer who is concerned about cleaning up the look of Alamogordo before trying to get someone to move there while working in El Paso. All of this may require a paradigm shift on the part of the Commissioners.

We need demand more of our city officials and of ourselves. We need to clean this town up - look at all the junk around the Walamrt parking lot. Also, I think we have the only Walmart in the country without landscaping (this I blame the city commissioners!).... I written several letters to our commission about the use of smart planning - use ordiances to control growth and redevelop decaying parts of town vs. unregulated sprawl- all to no avail.
Why haven't our leaders shamed the NM Dept of Transportation into installing continous sidewalks along a major raodway like White Sands Blvd? It's probably because no one has asked (look at Orogrande the next time you drive through and you'll know what I mean). Do you realize Alamogordo leads the state in vehicle/pedestrian accidents?
How can the Army Corp of Engineers install the drainage channel through a city owned park (Foothills) and not return the park to its original condition?.... Again, a travesty upon our city leaders for not demanding it. Instead, we are going to use Keep Alamogordo Beautiful resources to do this. This town needs as much "Beautiful" as it can get, and this resource should be used elsewhere.
I'm personally glad to see several old-time commissioners go in this last election. Hopefully, this sends a message to the old guard that we demand change - and we'll be looking out for the next election cycle.

I work at WSMR and Alamogordo is in no discussions when it comes to the 2013 stationing of a HBCT or the transitioning of the 2nd engineering batallion later this summer. Wouldn't that be part of the economic development folks. The local Realtors should start advertising or meeting with Col Geibel or McCabe to see how to offer our city. APS isn't much but it is better than Onate.

Think about this: when it comes to wsmr,would you turn east for ten miles or turn west for sixty miles to live, fort bliss, would you stay in el paso or drive north for sixty miles to live,the same goes for that stupid spaceport

The fact is that military folks would come here if we had more to offer then greedy merchants and narrow minded, self serving city and county officials. If we were not so busy playing the "special favors" game that is traditional in Alamogordo. When new comers are told of the begrudging attitudes they can expect (glad to take your money, now get out) of course they choose to go elsewhere.{Disclaimer: NOT all merchants, NOT all officials. But it only takes a few stupidly arrogant business owners/officials to make the entire town look ridiculously backward}
