Don't knock the boob tube so much.

Sure, it's not a replacement for good parenting, but with a lack of that, it's not that bad. Most sitcoms are chock full of life lessons; especially the family shows.

My parents were absolute failures, and if it wasn't for TV I'd probably be more screwed up than they are. Thankfully, I became well adjusted enough that I actually learned to take control and seperate my parents when they were fighting. I kid you not... I parented my parents.

I sure didn't learn to be adjusted from them, so it must've been TV. It's all I had.

wow. these kids have got the adults wrapped around their lying little fingers! don't these people know a cry for attention when they hear one? oh, and these kids need to start beating the crap out of the bullies...stick up for yourself! childless adults don't care about the plight of a middle schooler, so get over it.
If they wouldn't get into trouble for beating up the bullies, they would. If the schools did something with the bullies, there would be no bullies. If the parents did something with their bullies, it would be a better place. But the bullies are mostly all talk anyhow.

Just because 3 students started spreading rumors doesn't mean that the school heads aren't doing their job. Don't blame people when you aren't fully aware of the situation. DeLand Middle School has an excellent administrative staff and they have been through a lot these 2 weeks trying to get everything under control. Your ignorance is obvious when you say they should be replaced.

I wonder what the difference is between some punk kid calling in a "Bomb" threat,or starting a rumor that they are going to carry out a botched massacre attemmpt? You go to jail on the first one and just get school discipline (which is nothing)on the second one! When they located the little twirps that started that rumor they should of slammed their butts in the slammer as an example to any and all that would want to do it again!

Did I understand this right?
The kid said he would lock the cafeteria doors and go on a shooting rampage. The authorities do not anticipate filing any charges.
Does that make any sense to you?
Do we need to wait until he kills about 50 students at lunch before we are going to do something! C'mon.

i heard that none of the jewish kids went to school today, just like on 9-11 when none of the jewish workers came to work that day as they knew what was about to happen.

Spare the rod, spoil the child and look at what we have growing up in today's society, a bunch of unruly, undisciplined children with no respect for the law or others who are running amok. And it doesn't matter what race they are. We disciplined our children, and yes, even spanked them when they were little. We taught them to be respectful of others and we always made sure we knew who they hung out with and we involved in their schools and never expected those schools to be their babysitters or disciplinarians. We also got to know their friends' families as best we could. And yes, they're privacy was minimal while living at home. And what did we get for all of our efforts? They are both very fine, upstanding law abiding citizens who we are very very proud of. Did we have our share of teenage troubles and antics? Sure we did, but nothing where the police ever had to get involved. I can never remember a time while my kids were growing up where we had to worry about all the crap that everyone has to worry about nowadays in our schools. Serious major lack of love and discipline in too many homes nowadays!

I don't know what to make of all of these incidents. And supposedly many of them are due to bullying? Back in my day if you were bullied, you took care of it by a fight after school, you told your parents, or you otherwise somehow dealt with it and went on with your life. None of this "I'm being picked on so I'm going to shoot everybody' stuff. I don't have kids, so I'm a bit out of that "loop;" do the kids coming up now actually idolize the Columbine killers and others like them? Or do they realize, as some posters have noted, all that has to happen is mention "Columbine" and everyone will start getting paranoid? Is that appealing to some of these kids? I'm sure some people will mention violent video games and movies; personally speaking, I think a good deal of the problem is that so many parents have raised their kids with little or no discipline; the kids are allowed to "act out" all of the time because parents don't want to "stifle" their kids, stunt their emotional development, or whatever. No easy answers I guess, but hopefully SOME answers will be found, soon.

So what you're saying is that the Jewish population had a heads up as to what was going to happen on 911? Please enlighten us on where you picked up that little tidbit??? If I do recall, that day was actually a Jewish holiday, which is why they weren't at work!

They are broken. They have no fear (of teachers, parents, police officers) or respect for others.
They end up uneducated and may take a life.
They will, no doubt, also be in line, waiting for their government handouts.
We're in trouble. Personal responsibility and the sanctity for human life are, sadly, out of fashion.
Well said .

I know as a kid , things were a lot different . You cannot even discipline your own children , IF you even cared to do so.

Yes, but were they actual threats or kids talking the way kids will? These were msgs on Myspace: kids will tell whatever tall tales they can muster on the internet even more than in person. Sure, these kids may be dangerous but they also were (and it's far more likely) just trying to get a rise out of someone ... and look: they did.

I think the police will evaulate the likelyhood of whether these kids would have had the means and drive to do something dreadful and respond based on that. My point is, as long as we respond as if the sky is falling when-ever you have kids grandstanding like this, pretty soon you'll just see more of the same because the little urchins will see that it works. Despite going to juvy, these kids probably are secretly loving all this!

You are evidently more correct than I am about my answer to that idiot's comment. I could be wrong about it being an actual Jewish holiday that day, so if I am, I retract my statement. I was just incensed by that idiot's comment about correlation between the Jewish people and that awful tragedy.

Why don't you ask the families of all the students that have been murdered, what there opinion is. You are living in La La Land.
Maye we should start having all are food delivered to are house and never go out for anything because people are killed every day by something that was not there fault. WE cant live in fear we need to start public execution and kill the killers the same way as they Kill.

these moron reporters aren't even literate. there was a "report" that there would be a "failed massacre plot" but the police are there even though it's just an unsubstantiated rumor.

Wow, these morons couldn't make it any more confusing if they tried. anyways, who cares, kids today can't be accounted for. glad i don't have one of these albatrosses.

The Slantinel SHOULD be naming the arrested "youts" Their age should be disregarded given the severity of the charges. We the public have a right to know who these evil youngsters are as well as their parents names and home addresses. We need to be able to protect ourselves from these kind of people.

Things have changed, gotten worse, where bullying in schools is concerned. Is it because these kids who bully think no one has recourse against them, that nothing happens? I don't know.

But htere's a question I've been asking for 20+ years to school officials which no one seems to be able to answer.

Why is it that if someone is walking down the street and someone comes up and attacks them, that person can be arrested, and self-defense is expected and encouraged, BUT..

On a school campus that same person defends themselves and they are equally punished as the attacker, and the attacker is not arrested.

What is the difference?

I don't see any, and that's what I told my kids, and they're all 21+ years old. That "policy" was in place when they were in school, and they were "good kids". We all have a right to defend ourselves against attackers, and I don't give a rat's fried green ass where it takes place.
