FDA: Chantix May Pose Psychiatric Risks

There are 54 comments on the The Associated Press story from Feb 1, 2008, titled FDA: Chantix May Pose Psychiatric Risks . In it, The Associated Press reports that:

“It may also cause an old psychiatric illness to reoccur.”

Government regulators said Friday the connection between Pfizer's anti-smoking drug Chantix and serious psychiatric problems is 'increasingly likely.'

The Food and Drug Administration said it has received reports of 37 suicides and more than 400 of suicidal behavior in connection with the drug. In November, the agency began investigating reports of depression, agitation and suicidal behavior among patients taking the popular twice-daily pill.

The agency's announcement comes two weeks after Pfizer added stronger warnings to the drug. In doing so, the company stressed that a direct link between Chantix and the reported psychiatric problems has not been established, but could not be ruled out. Read more

How about those veterans with PTSD they used as guinea pigs to test Chantix on people with mental illness? Pfizer deserves to be put out of business for that one.
I hope they get paid handsomely

I quit smoking 3 years ago thankfully on my own will power and I smoked for about 9-10 years, it took me about 2 weeks to get the courage to quit because I kept making excuses to smoke. I will say for myself personally I couldn't believe how easy it was for me to quit. For me, the hardest part was getting over my cigarette such as "after eating", or the "morning wake up cigarette" and I made a promise to myself to not smoke after my favorite cigarette and when I did I was surprised to see that it wasn't as hard as I made it out to be. After realizing how easy it was after that I knew if I could get over that cigarette that it was just going to get easier after that and it did. The thing with me to is that for the 3 years I quit I never craved to have a cigarette, I realize for some people it's easier said then done, but I'm just saying that I'm living proof it can be done and I wish you all nothing but the best in your journey to quit those things

Is that going to be word #1,000,001? Apparently "Web 2.0" is #1,000,000 (although it's not one word at all)...

This message is erroneous and misleading; Chantix is NOT a psychotropic medication--"HumanSpirit " is misinformed, and is using this forum to alarm the public.
Chantix is a partial agonist and partially activates nicotinic acetylcholine receptors and does cross the blood brain barrier.
A determining factor of a psychotropic med is that it does cross the blood brain barrier.

A psychoactive drug, psychopharmaceutical or psychotropic is a chemical substance that crosses the blood-brain barrier and acts primarily upon the central nervous system where it alters brain function, resulting in changes in perception, mood, consciousness, cognition, and behavior.

On the other hand, there are more recent studies suggesting that there is no noticeable difference between Chantix and other smoking cessation treatments in levels of psychological abreaction.

The jury is still out, despite the FDA opting to err on the side of caution.

A beligerent drunk (who, by the way, was stupid enough to have NEEDED the product in the first place) going through nicotine withdrawals and taking Chantix to help ease that problem does something rash--so it must be the Chantix?

Something is wrong about the evaluation/conclusion. How is this coming from the same people who insist that there is "no evidence" that SHS causes harm?

I'm just saying that Chantix does cross the blood brain barrier. Having said that, I believe our society is quick to blame their actions and behaviors on anything other than themselves. There are huge numbers of people that successfully take the same meds that do not commit suicide, homicide or other extreme behaviors. We are also a very litigious society, that will jump on the "class action bandwagon" in a split second. Famously, the all time case of no accountability; "I spilled my hot coffee, on myself in my own car, so I must sue McDonalds."

Just ended my 12th day on chantix . Had a serious spell of almost unmanageble anger (almost because i contained my strong desire to destroy something) last night with my family and had to leave the house for 40 mins to cool off. Before I left my beautiful wife said something isn't right....in that time had violent thoughts that I have NEVER had before. Knew right there and then something was wrong...stopped taking it immediately...

My hub smoked for 35 years and quit - cold turkey. When his friend died of cancer, that was the straw that broke the camel's back so to speak. He never went back to smoking again and has been off cigarettes for 15 years. You can do without Chantix if you really want to. It takes fierce determination and will power, but that doesn't mean you can't do it. My hub did it and he said it wasn't as bad as he had thought. There were a few times when he had an urge to smoke a cigarette but he said he immediately fixated on something else. Yes, he's stubborn, so maybe that's a plus, lol! Anyway, good luck to you all in your effort to quit smoking. Just remember that taking a drug to help you try and quit, is not necessarily the answer, because almost all drugs have side effects. Some aren't so bad, others are bad enough to eventually cause internal organ damage over time, and deadly enough to kill you, but the pharmaceutical companies will never admit that. Seems many doctors won't either.
