("Others say Deltona's lack of recreational offerings for youths is likely a contributing factor. The city has no malls, movie theaters")

Oh, right, a new mall and a movie theater will stop gang activity. Gosh, why didn't I think of that?? That explains why Los Angeles, Atlanta, New York, Miami, etc. etc. doesn't have gangs.

Yeah, what a joke, shows how clueless some people are.

Whether we are actually talking about real gangs or want-to-be gangs, the problem needs to be addressed. Nonetheless this problem is more then a city or county problem and with most of society's problems the first step in resolving this problem is at home.

But putting more copes on the road and busting these kids is a waste of time. The cops will arrest these kids, the parents will yell and scream how it's not theirs kids fault and the world is just picking on them. Then they will spend big dollars to get their kid off of whatever charge they got arrested for and nothing has been solved. Maybe we should change the laws and hold the parents responsible (did someone say that out load) for their children's behavior. Maybe some quality time doing community services together picking up trash along the road will make these parents pay attention to their kids and their activities.

The solution starts at home before they turn of age.

Gangs; another great by-product of "Culture and Ethnic Diversity". Deltona is becoming Pine (Crime) Hills North. All of the residents need to "celebrate and cherish" the Wonderful Ethnic Community that is Deltona. Isn't that the Politictally Correct way to view the Deltona ghetto/slum/war zone?
Or should they all wonder why it smells like crap when they live in a toilet?

Sadly enough the parents who should be reading this are NOT and the one's who do will stick up for the kids because it's not their kids fault or their bad parenting skills.

We need more government programs, yes should solve the problem.

Same ole crap. I have lived in Deltona for over 17 years.
I live in a 2 street neighborhood around a lake and love it, I am 20 minutes from Smyrna to catch some waves. My neighbors are wonderful, we all know each love each other regardless of skin color. But yes, like the rest of the country scum is gathering steam in our community. Listening to that idiot savant in the video is exactly part of the problem. He is obviously a product of his environment which apparently recognizes that having a place to dispel their rugrats is to solve all of societies ills. Babies need to stop having babies and maybe we can curb such behavior by a fraction. Most of these kids have no hope or choice due to their degenerate parents or should I say "lack" of parents. But give Deltona a break, we have some great programs out here but if the parents don't give a crap, how do you expect their soon to be tweeker kids too. Pay now or later. Either way all our communities suffer.

Kids join gangs for many reason. They may have real or imagined problems at home and are looking for a sense of family and belonging. They want respect even if they get it from fear, they have self-esteem problems.Drugs and money play a big part too.

It's not a simple matter but building a movie theater and mall isn't going to get to the core of their problems. Cities with all these things still have gangs. You see them hanging outside and scaring off other kids and families.

Serious counseling for the kids & family is needed, they need to be taught self-esteem and self-respect.The schools, parents, churches, the entire community needs to get involved to want the government to do it all is ridiculous and financially impossible. Whether it's your kid or not you will suffer the consequences of gangs.

...si I guess Deltona isn't too great a place for seniors to retire too?

Are there any senior citizen gangs one could join for protection? Do they teach you how to handle a gun and a knife?

Pretty bad when someone from Sanford is ragging on your city......almost like Bithlo ragging on Wedgfield. Go hang out on Celery Street after dark.

I hope the adult population of Deltona from all walks of life come together to help mentor the young people at risk of being drawn into the gangs.
The schools and homes in this area are the primary places where gang activity can be stopped, parents and teachers should keep open communications with their kids and students and not go straight for the strong arm lockdown tactics that we do as parents or see happen in our schools by administrators who lack the tools or knowledge to handle this sort of thing.... good luck to Delton and all its fine citizens....

Baloney, tell me one church in the area that says their youth program is to capacity and are turning kids away! If these kids and/or parents want to be involved in after school activities the area offers more then most of us had growing up with.

Bad kids are BAD kids period and blaming the city is flat out wrong. Maybe the families should try family night at the roller skating rink, take in a movie, volunteer at one of many senior centers in the area, get involved with anyone of the youth or adult sports programs around area or flat read a book.

No let's blame everyone but the parent(s) for these short comings. Besides if a teenager wants to better themselves they need to take the initiative, unless we are talking about 7-8 year olds with the gang problems.

I remember many years ago when I called Deltona the Concrete block Trailer Park, because houses were so cheap, and the area was full of rednecks.
Now,... to have those days back.
I never would have believed this would happen. Another benefit of population growth!

crack down.

Better to be too strict than too lax. You not only hurt society by failing to crack down on criminal behavior, you also fail the teens who are seduced into dead-end lives of violence, crime and despair. Our efforts to be kind and "politically correct" have resulted in far more ruined lives than we would have if we simply had the courage to be intolerant of criminal behavior and contemptious of those who argue for leniency.
