(Florida) School Board Ponders Student Group Ban That Would Block Gay-Straight Alliance

School officials in Lake County are considering banning extra-curricular activities for students, an order that would effectively keep a proposed gay-straight alliance from forming in one of its schools.

I do not doubt that they would attempt to shut down a whole school district if it has a scent of equality.

Dixie, Bradford and Lake counties are notorious for this kind of crap, and they get beaten up in Federal court on a regular basis.

Then again, you've got Rhonda Storms in Brandon, just a short drive from downtown Tampa.

I thought that Florida had regressed politically and sadly no turning back with the state elections of Rick Scott and Marco Rubio but I was pleasantly surprised with the last election.

No. The federal Equal Access Act requires that all groups be allowed to meet on school grounds if even one group is allowed to. The school CAN bar ANY group from meeting on school grounds to prevent a GSA from meeting there. I think doing so is lousy and immoral, but they can legally do it, and teh ACLU cannot do anything about it.

Legally, under the 1984 Equal Access Act, if they really, really don't want that wicked GSA, the only thing they CAN do is genocide against every other extra-curricular group in the school. It's the inevitable consequence of Christian's getting what they had prayed for, religious groups in schools protected by federal law. The only way to stop them is by killing off all the other extra-circulars, but the law isn't specific to just religious groups and here we are today.
