1 Puerto Rico has been recognized internationally as a marvel for its wildlife diversity; and unfortunately, we can all agree that Puerto Ricans have failed to nurture the innate beauty that they have been blessed with, but this could be said about all of us. How many of us are culpable of environmental neglect? How many of us are so busy providing for our families that we forget to provide for our planet? Puerto Rico has its fair share of problems, but none of these problems are cultural. All of the problems are structural. According to the 2000 Census, 44% of the people living in the metropolitan area(San Juan, Caguas and Fajardo) are BELOW the poverty line. It does not take a large stretch of the imagination to understand the ripple effect of this statistic. According to Caribbean Business, "unemployment has been high for decades. To compensate for poor job prospects in the private sector, commonwealth government employment has swelled compared with national and international levels. This has placed a heavy burden on the private sector and individual citizens to maintain an inefficient government whose policies, more often than not, inhibit competitiveness and participation in the private sector economy." Government has become a structural constraint, and the current "economic model [has been] unable to generate sufficient job opportunities in the private sector" (Caribbean Business). With so little income, the local government barely receives enough money from taxes to keep itself operating. And with such low levels of personal income, the economy has been thrust into a long, painful recession. There is a proven correlation between poverty and crime. Any sane person will choose to live a life of crime if crime offers the best chance of getting out of poverty. So, crime is actually an employment issue, and the exodus of Puerto Ricans to Florida and New York is also caused by lack of good employment opportunities. Ultimately, the island needs better job opportunities for the near 4 million inhabitants. How can we create good jobs when people have become disillusioned by the system, the government has run out of resources, and companies are fleeing in pursuit of lower financial costs and greater economic profit? |

1 They might night go to a school or McDonalds to shoot anyone, because they stay in their neighborhood and kill everyone. Is it any better that they are killing people in their neighborhoods? I am Puerto Rican and am not happy with the way our people (in general) act. There is only a small percent of Puerto Rican people that succeed in college, who want to be productive citizens. I am disgusted that a lot of our people who live in the U.S. don't care about learning English. They don't want to learn anything. Too many of the women want to bring a bunch of babies into this world without a plan of how they are going to support their children. I can't stand our people that depend on welfare. Why would you be so irresponsible? If you are not financially stable, then why would you bring a herd of children into this world? The poor children don't have a chance of living a good life and most of them grow up to be like the peole they were raised around. Too many of the Puerto Rican men are using drugs and killing others. I am almost positive that you will not believe I am Puerto Rican for the simple fact that I write proper sentences. Usted sabes que you dije la verdad. Si no me crees, estas ciego. |

1 No. With few exceptions the taking of human life is a terrible act. But, the exercise of premeditated, indiscriminate and wanton butchery of life is horrifying. There's no parity between a neighborhood thug and a murderous sociopath; not in pathology, prosecution, adjudication or sentencing.
Do something about it! Be creative! Whining doesn't count. The folk I know are generally optimistic about the future. Most of the folk I know are career driven and competent individuals. Some need an occasional nudge; others will fall short. But in the whole, they share a desire to 'succeed'. I have yet to meet anyone aspiring to live in crime-ridden neighborhoods or in perpetual poverty. Maybe I'm hanging with the wrong people. That's an outrageous statement. How gullible can one be? Show me your data!!! Who's feeding you this compost? How many individuals wouldn't give their right nut to learn English right now? Every single adult ESL program (that I'm aware of) across the nation is under-funded, filled to capacity and have staggering waiting lists. |

1 Fine! Let's throw some in prison and sterilize the rest. Women of all colors and socioeconomic status across the world are having children as I waste my time in front of the computer. I'm happy for all of them. Employing my tax dollars to help families less fortunate than mine is fine with me. Call me crazy! Is this a class issue with you..? Do you have a problem with poor people..? What kind of society do you want to live in..? Do you even realize that national food stamp benefits average just under $1.06 per person/meal in the US? http://www.fns.usda.gov/pd/fssummar.htm Do you want to discuss corporate welfare or the cost of war? "a heard of children"??? Jeeze! I'll tell you what.., give their children the worst possible education, deny them preventive healthcare, and then haul them off to prison before they turn 21. That will surely teach them a lesson! Many won't make it out of poverty. Some will need our help. I'm game! Too many young people are slipping away from society. It's common in rural, suburban and urban America. In fact, dissatisfaction and fatalism among youth is a worldwide scourge that cuts across socioeconomic planes, gender and race. Adults are very helpful; some whine.., others supply the poison and peddle the guns. Por supuesto. Como nos decía Cervantes: "En la tierra de los ciegos, el tuerto es rey." |
