Sperm whales can dive as deep as two miles into the water, and their bodies have unique physiological adaptations to allow them to survive the intense cold and crushing pressure of these dives. They can limit circulation to the brain and other organs, slow the heart to 10 beats per minute to conserve oxygen, and collapse the lungs and rib cage to withstand pressure.

Pangaea was not the beginning position of the land on Earth, but one of as many as six lost worlds that have come and gone. Pangaea was preceded by Pannotia about 550-650 million years ago and by Rhodinia around 1.8 billion years ago. Before them, at intervals of roughly 500 million years, Nuna, Kenorland, and Ur existed and then broke up.

In the last National Geographic Literacy Survey, about 11 percent of 18-to-24-year-old citizens of the U.S. could not even locate the U.S. on a map. The Pacific Ocean's location was a mystery to 29 percent; Japan, to 58 percent; France, to 65 percent; and the United Kingdom, to 69 percent. More young U.S. citizens in the study knew that the island featured in the TV show "Survivor" was in the South Pacific than could find Israel.

The Sandman is a mythological personification of sleep. The term developed from the “sand” that is commonly found in the corner of the eyes in the morning. The sandman in E.T.A. Hoffman’s (1776-1822) short story would throw sand in the eyes of naughty children who wouldn’t fall asleep, causing their eyes to fall out. The sandman would then collect their eyes and feed them to his own children.
