John Hanson (1721-1783)

When we think of the President of the United States, many people do not realize that we are actually referring to presidents elected under the U.S. Constitution. Everybody knows that the first president in that sense was George Washington. But in fact the Articles of Confederation, the predecessor to the Constitution, also called for a president– albeit one with greatly diminished powers. Eight men were appointed to serve one-year terms as president under the Articles of Confederation. The first was John Hanson, in 1781. His exact title was the “President of the United States in Congress Assembled.”

In the average home, 75% of the electricity used to power home electronics is consumed while the products are turned off. The average desktop computer idles at 80 watts, while the average laptop idles at 20 watts. A Sony PlayStation 3 uses about 200 watts and nearly as much when idle. Idle power consumes more electricity than all the solar panels in America combined

Every spring, golfers come from all over the world to compete in the World Ice Golf Championships held in Uummannaq, Greenland. The green is white, so the ball is fluorescent pink or orange. The obstacles are icebergs and polar bears. The temperatures are around -58 degrees Fahrenheit. The shape of the course, which is created anew each year, is dictated by the position of icebergs in the frozen fjord in which the Championships take place. However, during the match, the course also changes as the pack ice drifts and new icy outcrops pop up.

While abortion and contraception were almost certainly limited to the rich, all classes, particularly the poor, resorted to “exposure.” Some people found it profitable to look for exposed infants in the town dumps and raise them as slaves or for sale. In legal documents, slaves are frequently designated as being “from the dump.”

Carpet near a fireplace can get very warm, making it a perfect place for an odd little creature called a “firebrat.” It has a long, flexible body and is able to eat almost anything.
The Firebrat is a small insect similar to the Silverfish, both in the order Thysanura. Firebrats prefer higher temperatures and require some humidity, and can be found in bakeries and near boilers or furnaces.
