There is no proof that Head Start has contributed to helping students graduate high school or to be better or more productive students. It would be easy for someone to trace the records of Head Start students and find that in fact more of them either dropped out of school early or did poorly in school than compared students that never attended Head Start.

Yes, you're right. Karl Rove had an influential role in Bush's White House as well.

Valerie Jarrett's role, however, was even questioned by the New York Times.

The Other Power in the West Wing

"If Karl Rove was known as George W. Bush’s political brain, Ms. Jarrett is Mr. Obama’s spine."

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/09/02/us/politics...

With little or no qualifications, she is the Senior Advisor to this president and holds the titled positions of Assistant to the President for Intergovernmental Affairs and Public Engagement, managing the White House Office of Public Engagement, Office of Intergovernmental Affairs and Office of Urban Affairs.

Jarrett has a staff of about three dozen and receives full-time Secret Service protection.

Couldn't find the number of people on Rove's staff but pretty sure it wasn't three dozen. Also, pretty sure he didn't receive Secret Service protection.

Valerie Jarrett’s mother, Barbara Taylor Bowman, co-founded a Chicago-based school in child development known as the Erikson Institute - named after the psychoanalyst Erik Erikson - who chose to resign from his professorship at the University of California rather than sign an anti-communist loyalty oath as the school required.
The Erikson Institute’s board of trustees included Tom Ayers (father of the former Weather Underground terrorist and lifelong Marxist Bill Ayers) and Bernardine Dohrn (longtime wife of Bill Ayers).
In 1983, Valerie Jarrett married the son of Vernon Jarrett, a black journalist who formerly wrote for the communist-influenced Chicago Defender. In the 1940s, Mr. Jarrett was a leader of the Chicago chapter of American Youth for Democracy -- youth wing of the Communist Party USA. He also served on a publicity committee for the Packinghouse Workers Union, a Chicago-based entity dominated by the CPUSA. In each of these endeavors, Mr. Jarrett had close contact with the aforementioned communist, Frank Marshall Davis.
According to The Washington Post, Vernon Jarrett was “a key influence” in persuading Harold Washington, a politician with powerful socialist ties, to run for mayor of Chicago in 1983.
It's either true or it isn't. And what if it is?

Don't like it get a job or two or three. I'm getting tired of people who think just because they can squirt out a child they are entitled to my money.
It's not for me to say what is okay or not. I am against legislating human behavior, no matter what it may be. There is no more long term welfare; perhaps you ought to really look into what she is receiving. There will always be stupid people around; there will always be dumb women who try to hold onto a man by getting pregnant.
There will always be people who want to get high, no matter how many drug laws exist.
There will always be people who want to smoke, no matter how many anti smoking laws there are.
I am against big government creating too many laws to control behavior. By the way, the majority of people on public assistance are single white women with children.
From what I have read, the amount a person receives on foodstamps is negligible. Stop worrying about what some poor black woman is getting on foodstamps; that's not your worst problem. Here you go!
Tell me about your education.
I dropped out of school when I was in ninth grade because I was pregnant — the school I was going to didn’t let me bring my daughter back, because they made it seem like I didn’t call them and tell them I had my daughter. So I dropped out of school because of that. I had my daughter at age 17.
I’ve been living in different houses. I was living with my grandma when I got pregnant, and then after she died I was living with my auntie and when my auntie moved, I went to a shelter. And then I moved in with my auntie, and she helped me find my own place, and then I got put out of there because I couldn’t pay the rent. This was in 2002. And then I moved in with this lady who was a friend of the family.
Basically, all my life, I had to live with people and in shelters. And so I finally got my own place. But if I lose this house and can’t pay my rent because I work at McDonald’s, I’ll be back at square one, and I won’t let my kids go through that again. Because I have four kids now, and at first, I only had one.

"In the delusional, bizarro world of the right wing, President Obama is providing lots of free stuff to lazy, criminal black and brown people in order to buy their votes. The newest iteration of this paranoid and racist right wing narrative is a viral video, released by Drudge and reported on the Fox website, that shows a black woman who claims to have received a free phone from the president. Since then, the right wing sites have been awash in commentary about free "Obama Phones" being distributed, to the poor, by the administration. This has been a topic on Fox Nation and the Fox News website...."

"Dave Briggs began the hoax narrative with his comment that "a government run program that provides free cell phones is raising a few eyebrows yet again and it turns out that one of the president's donors, along with the world's richest man, are getting even richer from the so called Obama phones."

Fact Check - He's referring to Carlos Slim who, according to Fox News, is "supplying cell phones to the poor." However, Trac Phone, which Slim has a 98.2% ownership of, has issued a "fact sheet" on behalf of its Safelink Wireless service which provides service for low income families as part of the Federal "Lifeline" Program which began in the Reagan administration and IS NOT DIRECTLY SUBSIDIZED BY TAXPAYER MONEY but rather the Federal Universal Service Fund which paid for by telecommunications companies. They describe the Lifeline program which DOES NOT INCLUDE PHONES."

According to Time, Rove is "the Busiest Man in Washington." According to Time, Cheney is the administration's "John Henry."
Cheney is "uniquely powerful." On the other hand, "no one, with the possible exception of the President, will be more responsible for the success or failure of Bush's presidency" than Rove.
Says Newsweek of Rove: "[He] has a hand in virtually every decision the president makes." Says Time of Cheney: "There is almost no major issue that doesn't feel his touch." (This is certainly a hands-on administration.)
It's enough to drive a poor influence-peddler crazy. If you need a wheel greased, who should you call? "The Indispensable Man" (Cheney)? Or "the man to see in Washington" (Rove)? If you're measuring influence, which is better: Cheney spending "half the working day" with W., or Rove talking "constantly" on the phone to Bush? Is Rove the shadow president? Or is Cheney?
This week has brought more conflicting evidence. Rove has almost single-handedly blocked the administration from permitting stem-cell research. Most Americans, Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson, and lots of top Republican politicians say it's a scientific and ethical good. Rove says it could alienate Catholic voters. Cheney, meanwhile, rushed back to the office a day after heart surgery, a frantic return that confirmed the Democratic suspicion that the White House—and President Bush—would collapse without him.
Naturally, administration folks—especially Cheney and Rove—insist President Bush is President Bush. He is the chairman, the CEO. He says jump, they say how high, etc. But Bush is a hands-off president—that's why Rove and Cheney have their hands in everything—and it's clear his underlings are remarkably powerful.

same thing carol. though x2.
According to the New York Times about Jarrett:

"Interviews with more than two dozen former and current administration officials offer a portrait of a woman wielding a many-faceted portfolio of power."

"Few have had the stature — and the ability to step outside traditional White House protocol — of Ms. Jarrett. She is the only staff member who regularly follows the president home from the West Wing to the residence, a practice that has earned her the nickname 'the Night Stalker.' When the Obamas take an out-of-town break, she often goes along."

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/09/02/us/politics...

What exactly qualifies her to have such influence over the President of the United States? Compared to someone like Karl Rove?

It's a very simple concept, Lily. You don't reward bad choices and bad behaviors.
Rather, you get out the message with influential leaders that bad choices have bad consequences and try to prevent as many as possible.
When Bill Clinton signed the Welfare Reform Act, it was stunning how many on welfare suddenly found work or a support system.
You want to make it too easy. That doesn't help anyone.
How does making it too easy for these young women to keep having children they can't afford help them and their children when it could have been prevented with an effective outreach program along with the government not making it so easy?
No one is rewarding anything; I highly doubt that a single mother with 4 kids working at McDonalds is living large even if she is receiving some assistance via foodstamps or medicaide.
I think free birthcontrol pills and condoms are a super idea along with sex education. However, despite all that there will always be dummies. There is no perfect world. There is no preventing hormones. There is legislating when and if people are going to have sex or have children.
Look at how it is backfiring in China; They've aborted all the girl babies and now have too many men, without a possibility of finding a mate in life. Who will mate with all those millions of Chinese men?
A friends niece just had a baby in Australia, the government gave them a baby bonus of $5000.00! Plus some other perks, I'll have to ask what they were.
Some countries love children and do every thing to help families nurture them, i.e. in Finland they have paternity leave as well and the government gives them formula and diapers.
Would you prefer to criminalize human behavior and create more homeless hungry children?
Did you learn that in your church today?
