Bleak budgets revive talk of fire-department consolidation

When residents of Orlando's Fairview Shores neighborhood dial 911, firefighters from the city's Station 9 about 21 2 miles away rush to the scene - even though an Orange County fire station is more than a mile closer. Full Story

I fail to understand why everyone is insisting OCFRD wants to take over Orlando...we have never wanted to take over orlando, that's a political issue which both departments may have to deal with.

Our department planned ahead for a rainy day and we are fortunate to be in a position were foresight has proven with planning you can avoid lay-offs and provide full coverage and service to the citizens of Orange County without raising taxes.

Your not for either but yet are going by there OCFR unions study not the one the taxpayers wanted and that both city and county worked on together. I am not entitled to anything nor have I said I was. I pay taxes the same as you. And we all pay for each others jobs by services we get, goods we buy and everything else. But I hope you and everybody enjoy the new venus which your tax dollaes paid for but yet you have to pay to use.
Didnt see you union guys complaining about the venues when they were having hearings about em. I was throwing a hissy fit, I knew they were in the end going to use general fund dollars to fund em but everyone said it was just crazy talk.

Time after time I had government people trying to shout me down on the venues.

See the taxpayers only can give you so much money, its up to out poorly organized and bad leadership politicaians to allocate it out. Unfortunately we have elected what in my opinion are imbeciles in terms of Buddy, Rich, Patty and the rest.

They evidently made deals eith the teachers, police firefighters, Toll authority, airport authority, downtown developer and flim flam artists of all shapes and sizes to get elected. Turns out the taxpayers couldnt deliver what these worthless politicians promised. Sorry!

I know the reason they did the study and I know the reason why it was stopped. Boasting about being the best of the best may come back to haunt you in an independant study of each department. I would change the tone if I were a certain union president.

Sorry to burst your bubble but yes, we do have 4 minute response times. We have an elderly lady who lives 4 houses down. She calls one of the neighbors about twice per month and the neighbor...often me, calls the FD. They are here by the time I walk to her house. Your city may not have the same times, but ours does and we intend to keep it that way.
Your problems are not mine and I don't give a ratsass how long it takes someone to get to you. If you really want to save money, move to a rural area that has volunteer only coverage. We live in a larger city for a reason. If we wanted county services...or lack thereof, we would have moved there.
Gary, Orlando is a hick town. It is obvious that you work for the hillbilly OFD. You all act like you are in Boston or NY but the truth is that you're just a little hick FD. South Florida FDs laugh at you. You can throw that "ISO 1 " rating around all you want but I tell you- I wouldn't want my relatives waiting for a response time from OFD when they are sitting around in the station waiting to hear RMAs sirens before they repond. OFD sits around and waits for fire that never comes and puffs out their little chests all the while performing piss poor on EMS calls which makes up 90% of the call load. Orange County Fire Rescue provides far superior service. Orlando isn't a urban FD, i mean come on.....ITS ORLANDO! LOL

Orlando Fire Department is the second best department in central Florida. Central Florida is a rural area w/ Orlando being the "big city". I bet the Topeka, Kansas Fire Department act like they're a "real" urban FD as well. LOL. I hate to break it to you OFD, but you are an average fish in a small pond.

Firefighters have the biggest racket in government going today they can all easily be replaced for half the money paid to them. 62k a year to sit at a fire station two days per week. Give me a freekn break.

"Our department makes 1,120 calls every day. Do you know how many of those calls the public expects perfection on? 1,120. Nobody calls the fire department and says, "send me two dumb-a$$ fireman in a pick up truck." In three minutes they want five brain surgeon decathlon champions to come out and solve all their problems."

Ofd has been saying there would be an increase in response times if they consolidated. They have been pushing this video on you tube, facebook and there local union site of them making 4 or 5 saves at the groves apt fire. I bet most citizens don't realize that the county has a fire station (72) only 1.3 miles away on conway rd. E72 was called on the second alarm only after E6 that is 2.8 miles away and E1 from downtown which is 4.3 miles away. Do they really have the citizens best intrest in mind?

Im for right sizing the FD in Orange and Orlando both. Its absolutely ridiculous to have duplicate fire services and departments fueding. Time to lay some firefighters off and give the hard working taxpayers a well deserved brealk from this band of entitlement seekers and their greedy unions, Two days a week of work and a kelly week vacation a month.

Ill bet we could replace every one of these douchnozzels at 1/2 of what they make with NO BENEFITS.

Now is the time to show the taxpayers about how much more these firefighters can make in the private sector, Go ahead we are waiting, and there are LOTS of people to replace them!

Of course you could replace them, anyone can be replaced.

The real issue is will those replacements run through a gunfight or into a burning building to save someone? Or know the firecode well enough to enforce it?

Yep. There are plenty of people who would enthusiastically do the job for a lot less taxpayer $$.
No one is saying that FF shouldn't be paid a fair wage, just that it should be commensurate with the job requirements and hours actually worked. Further, ALL government employees unions should be barred from contributing either time or $$ to election campaigns.

Sitting on your ace on the taxpayers dime is not really work is it ? Firefighting is the only job that allows most to to work a full time job when not working. As I posted before I know two firefighters that call going to work their days off.
