Frostproof struggles with growing or disappearing

There is no Wal-Mart or Publix here. No Chili's or Burger King. No mega subdivisions of cookie-cutter homes. Full Story

You are descended from immigrants. A non-native born in a new land. Just like almost everyone else.

I was born and raised in Frostproof. I moved away for about 20 years and moved back for 4 years. I could not afford to live in Fl so I had to move away. I hate seeing Frostproof the way it is now, I have very fond memories of Frostproof. It is too bad it costs so much to live there now with the taxes and ins. I wish the town all the luck in the world and it will always be home to me.

Obviously you cared enough to take the time "out of your busy schedule" to read the article and make a comment...

I love all these dumbazzes arguing about a town that 99% have never been to or even know where it is. Stick to stuff you know about...like traffic congestion and high crime.

It is a shame there is so much development going on. I am one of the 1 percent that has been there and liked it very much.

So, the wealthy and prominent family who has the most and really doesn't have anything to sweat tells all the folks who are losing their lively hoods not to worry, because 60 years ago this happened, and they survived just fine...except that half the town was lost, and the world doesn't work the same way it did 60 years ago. Nice to live in a protected world and see it through rose-colored glasses. Mind if we borrow those in the bread line? then maybe things wont' seem so bad. growth is inevitable, unless you actually fight against it. How you grow is what defines you as a town, and community. there is such a thing as "smart growth " and if you have the right-minded leaders, then it is possible to look forward to a future, instead of sitting in your porch rockers watching all your neighbors move away or die off.
If you have no businesses, you have no families, no families, is no schools, or groceries, or hospitals, etc, etc... town death sneaks up on you before you know what happened.
Good Luck, FrostProof
I lived in Frostproof until about fifteen yrs ago.In the years since I've made trips back there and was shocked at how the town has changed. It's like there is nothing there anymore.

I'm originally from the Maryland. Growth will eventually connect Lake Wales with Frostproof. The DC metro area is only a 20 minute highway drive from the baltimore metro area

I was born in Lake Wales, Florida. FP is just around the corner. Let me also state that I am served 14 years in the Armed Forces and travelled the world. Most Americans dont comprehend just how much we take for granted or just how blessed our country is. Every town is important and has its purpose. North or south what is the difference. One life altered is too much and there are important lessons. People are leaving large cities for smaller towns.
Please consider that yes free trade has harmed the United States, but nothing harms us more than ignorance. That includes myself.... however at least I had the huevos to put my life on the line for my beliefs instead of couch potatoes complaining. Please keep that in mind.

Frostproof seems like one of those places when they have their Christmas parade they get both police cars started and running at the same time and in the window of the gourmet food shop, they feature a jar of "Cheez-Whiz".
I own one of the "gourmet" shops in Frostproof with 15 years in the restaurant business and 2 articles in the orlando sentinel you can rest assured that cheese whiz is not on the menu. Trust me you can get better cheaper food here than in corporate run high volume gimmicky Orlando type restaurants.

all we have to do is sit back and wait, the change is coming. and includes frostproff. you have all of tha open range. the builders are not going to let that land slip by tham. you will see a boom down the road. look at little sebring. just in the last five years. wow who would have beleaved it. your day is is just arownd the corner frostproff. sit tight and when they want your land. take tham to the cleaners. and then you to can sit back and laff like ben griffin. the day is very near. be ready . dont under sell. if i was you and im not. i would buy as much land as i could afford near any intrance to your little town. it will be in demand down the road. lots of luck. use your head not your feelings. and your town will come out on top. jurgan.

When I was in elementary school we lived on Lake Reedy. My family sold their business and we moved to Middle Tennessee.(This was in the late 80's) I have never returned to Frostproof but have always dreamed of eventually coming back there. I keep hoping that my company will open an account in the area so that I can be in the area.

Is Maryland's Fried Chicken still there? They had the BEST cheeseburgers ever. I have never found another one like their's!

I actually was around the same age as Ben Hill Grifin Jr.s daughter-Candy. They were actually much more "down to earth" people than most would think.

I am going to have to plan a trip to bring my husband and son there to visit. If nothing more that for old time's sake.
