A part of Airside 2 never outfitted with gates is known as the "Secret Garden" among airport insiders.

8 of those 12 gates that the article says that are not used, are for small regional planes like Comair used to use. They are under the people mover from the landside terminal (ticket counter and baggage claim) to airside 4 (where the planes park). There is a big difference between a gate that used to be used with planes that had less 100 passengers (usually 50 passenger planes) and a gate that has planes like 737s, 747s, 757s, 767s, 777s, MD-80s, MD-90s, 717s, A318s, A319s, A320s, A321s, A330s, A340s, etc. Because the rental fee for ticket counter space, gate space, and landing fees are getting more expensive, airlines have learned to use less gates, less ticket counter space to try to keep costs from going too high.
