The father of Zahra Baker, who was
killed and dismembered by her stepmother, has been deported to Australia
with his daughter's remains.

Adam Baker, 33, had moved to Hickory, North Carolina to be with Elisa Baker, whom he had met online and went on to marry.

Ten-year-old Zahra travelled with Mr Baker, who had gained custody of the child when her mother suffered postpartum depression.

She was beaten, left bruised and locked in a room for hours, according to police and ABC News.

Murdered: The remains of Zahra Baker were scattered across two counties

When she was killed, her disappearance was not reported for weeks. Investigators eventually determined she had been killed.

They found her prosthetic leg and parts of her body scattered among animal remains across two counties.

Investigators also found parts of her
vertebrae which indicated her spine had been sawed at the neck. They never found the girl's head.
Adam Baker was never arrested in connection with the murder of his daughter.

His attorneys told WSOC that Zahra's remains will be buried in a family plot in Australia.

Baker left the country two weeks ago, after he received a suspended sentence for misdemeanor crimes, the Charlotte Observer reported.

While charges remain against Baker in other counties, his attorney Shell Pearce said he did not think he would be made to return for hearings.

His departure comes after authorities revealed last year that Baker was in the country illegally and officials were organising his deportation.

Elisa Baker, 42, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in September last year and was sentenced to 15 to 18 years in jail.

She claimed she had found the child dead in her bed and, together with Baker, decided they couldn't report to police it as he was undocumented.
Adam
Baker told his wife he 'would take care of it' and cut up the girl's body in a bathroom, his wife told police. He told his wife he needed her help in finding places to dispose of the body, she said.

Following Elisa Baker’s arrest, police found she had been married to someone else while married to Baker. At the time of the trial, he found out he was
her seventh husband.

The Australian mother of a 10-year-old disabled girl who was murdered by her American stepmother in North Carolina said Tuesday she has no idea what became of her daughter’s ashes since the child’s father brought them to Australia.

Attorney Shell Pearce said Monday that his client, Adam Baker, left the United States roughly two weeks ago at the behest of U.S. federal immigration officials, bringing the remains of his daughter, Zahra, with him for burial in Australia.

I think Adam Baker murdered his daughter. I think Elisa helped him dispose of the body. She was such a kook she ended up taking the rap for everything.

Another child murderer walked away free. Too disgusting.

At least he is out of the US, Australia's problem now.

Remains found in area previously searched in Zahra Baker case

LENOIR, NC (WBTV)- WBTV has learned that investigators have found human remains at Winkler Way and Highway 268 in Caldwell County.

Agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Hickory Police Department and State Medical Examiner's Office are on scene.

Sources tell WBTV's Steve Ohnesorge that they believe a skull is among the remains.

When asked if the remains could be those of Zahra Baker, a source told WBTV it is "crossing their minds."

Officials have said in the past that Adam Baker, Zahra's father, would be the first person eligible to ask for Zahra's remains. Baker, in several interviews with WBTV News, has said he wants to "Give Zahra a proper burial back in Australia."

Baker's attorney, Mark Killian, said he would be looking into what needs to be done next to accommodate Adam in that request.

Zahra's stepmother, Elisa Baker, pled guilty in September to second degree murder and was given an 18 year prison sentence.

Adam Baker was not charged in the Zahra case but does still face several unrelated misdemeanors and two felonies.

HICKORY, N.C.-- Officials in Hickory are looking for volunteers to help build a playground to honor the disabled girl whose stepmother pleaded guilty to killing her.

The Hickory Daily Record reported volunteers will work with the Kiwanis Clubs of Catawba County and the city of Hickory on April 12-14 to build the Zahra Baker All Children's Playground.

The playground will include a 50-foot slide, a sand area, swings and more.

More than $200,000 has been raised for the project.

Zahra was reported missing in October 2010. Her body was found weeks later. Elisa Baker was sentenced to 15 to 18 years in prison in September after pleading guilty to second-degree murder and other charges.

Zahra wore a prosthetic leg, a result of her fight with two bouts of cancer.

I want them to find the evidence to charge Adam Baker with murder.

He wasn't even charged with neglect or anything related to her disappearance. He wasn't charged with desecrating her poor little body. Nothing. Pisses me off.

Agreed. They didn't seem to even try to get to the bottom of it. What the he11. I hope somebody in Australia, maybe Zahra's mom, can hold him responsible for taking her from the country. I know her mom was not in Zahra's life but they also did their part to shut her out and they were NOT supposed to be able to move her out of the country without her knowledge.

Her mom had been searching for her and when she finally found her, Zahra was murdered.

They knew she would tell all the evil things they did to her. What they did to her was so awful they took her out of school so no one could find out.

Still upsets me to think of what all that poor little girl endured and she was ALL ALONE. No one to turn to, no one to help her, no one to hug her. Adam Baker is not worth of life. Neither is his soul mate. At least she is being punished. But he isn't.

Maybe someone is Australia will chop him up and scatter his body parts. From what I have read that is a common occurrence in Australia. He deserves it.

Hickory unveils Zahra Baker memorial playground

Published: May 19, 2012
Updated: May 21, 2012 - 10:35 AM

HICKORY, N.C.

The city held a ribbon-cutting to dedicate the Zahra Baker memorial playground’s official opening Saturday morning. As soon as the ribbon was cut, dozens of children flooded onto the playground. They laughed and played as the adults lingered at the entrance to read the bronze plaque. It is inscribed with her portrait and the words,“Zahra, You Touched Us 1999 – 2010.”

Some children sprinted and others rolled their wheelchairs over the spongy rubber safety surface covering the ground under the new bright equipment. The initials ZB marked the entrance to the play structure. Up to four children slid down the 50-foot-long hillside slide at once.

The children may have been unaware that the playground’s namesake was a cancer survivor who lost her left leg, part of her lung and much of her hearing to the disease. It was in recognition of her struggles that the playground amenities were designed to accommodate both able-bodied and special-needs children alike.

A pair of wheelchair-bound sisters, Megan, 16, and Morgan Bibbee, 9, sat side-by-side with matching grins as they took a ride in a giant purple boat-shaped piece of equipment as their father rocked it back and forth. From there, it was on to the wheelchair-accessible swings.

“They were the first ones on the boat – they loved it,” said their father Kevin Bibbee.“There’s nothing like this in the area. This is really special.”

He reflected for a moment as his daughters enjoyed the swings:“Zahra wanted to be like the other children even though she was different, and that’s just how we want to be treated.”

People from across the city, county and region volunteered their time, efforts and money to make sure the playground got built. Once the funds and equipment were in place, the Hickory city public service workers and the engineering staff shouldered the burden of making sure everything was in place and done right.

Zahra was 10 years old when she was murdered in September 2010. Her stepmother, Elisa Baker, pleaded guilty to the crime in September 2011. She was sentenced to a maximum of 18 years and six months in jail. As a part of her plea agreement with prosecutors, Elisa led Hickory police and SBI investigators to the rural locations where she dumped Zahra’s dismembered body.

“This is just another example of a community coming together and remembering Zahra,” said Hickory Police Chief Tom Adkins.“We have been able to turn something negative into a positive for this area’s children.”

At first, the goal was to raise $85,000 to build the park. When that goal was achieved and surpassed, the new goal was $150,000. As each subsequent goal was met, hopes and efforts increased. In the end,$200,000 was raised for the park.

The money paid for the park’s equipment including a play web with interactive features, a sand area and much more.

“One single piece of the special-needs equipment cost $25,000,” Hickory Mayor Rudy Wright said.

The brightly colored equipment brings new life to one of Hickory’s lesser-known parks.

“This was a perfect way to rejuvenate this park,” said Hickory’s Ward 2 Councilman Bruce Meisner.“The key word is commitment – this just shows that Hickory is a can-do area. When we put our minds to it, we can do anything.”

It took the efforts and gifts of thousands to make the dream of a park in honor of Zahra’s memory a reality.

“This is the culmination of the way Hickory does things,” said Wright.“That little girl is going to be remembered. People are going to come here and say,‘I’ve got to do something to make sure no other children are abused.”

Adkins agreed.

“I can’t think of a better tribute to Zahra than this playground,” he said.

Seems odd that the "additional testing" would take that long. I'd think even DNA testing could be done in that period of time, and there are other methods (dental etc) that would be quicker ways of making positive identification. I wonder if there's anything else indicating cause of death that could be complicating things, since they already convicted Elisa.

I still think it's awful that Zahra's POS father was able to leave the country where she got health care and had other family support and he was never held accountable. There is NO WAY that he was not somehow complicit in Zahra's death. It's possible that he wasn't actively involved in killing her, but he certainly put her in that situation and didn't love her enough to get her out, and after she was gone he absolutely covered for Elisa. Why wasn't he held accountable in any way for that? And why was he "rewarded" her remains when her biological mother was not? Still something very odd about the whole darn thing.

Thieves steal items from Zahra Baker Memorial near Hudson

ROBERT C. REED
HDR-Zahra-Baker-Dedication

Katherine Burch of Hudson takes a moment to reflect at the dedication of the Zahra Baker Memorial on Christie Road.

Posted: Thursday, June 20, 2013 3:26 pm

Record news partner WSOC Channel 9 reports that thieves have stolen items from the Zahra Baker Memorial on Christie Road near Hudson.

Sheriff Deputies in Caldwell County are stepping up patrols after the thefts were reported Wednesday night.

Property owner Jake Icenhour erected the memorial at the site where police found some of the remains of the murdered 10-year-old girl.

Her stepmother, Elisa Baker, pled guilty to second-degree murder in the case and is serving an 18-year prison sentence as a result.

Icenhour said someone took several solar lights and other items from the memorial during the last week.
"It is a shame. It is pitiful. It is a crying shame. I can't believe people got no heart," said Icenhour.
Icenhour has replaced some of the solar lights.

He hopes the thieves will return the stolen items.

Zahra Baker’s mum hits out

By Caleb Taylor
Oct. 14, 2013, 7 a.m.

ZAHRA Baker’s birth mother broke down in tears before the screening of last night’s controversial 60 Minutes interview with the woman convicted of the brutal murder of her 10-year-old daughter.

Emily Dietrich was approached by the Advertiser at her Glenfield home but said she was too upset to comment on the case, which has made headlines in the US, Australia and the UK.
See your ad here

However, earlier in the week she posted an emotional plea to Facebook, decrying the interview, and making a reference to her daughter’s murderer and stepmother Elisa Baker being a “putrid monster”.

“Just let the putrid monster rot in her cell instead of giving her attention for her actions, and just let my daughter’s name rest,” Ms Dietrich posted.

“Zahra is not a ratings raiser, she was a beautiful girl and now a glowing, winged angel.”

Furthermore, saying she had “cried herself to sleep out of shock, disgust and bad memories,” in the Facebook post.

Ms Dietrich has remained largely silent on the death of her daughter.

In a 2011 interview screened on an affiliate of American network NBC, Ms Dietrich said she held “a lot of resentment towards her former partner (Adam Baker)– there’s a big difference between being not guilty and being innocent,” she said.

The comments were made after Elisa Baker was jailed for second-degree murder.

“I could only glare at her for a moment,” she said.

“I mainly wanted her to see me, and for her to see the pain that she’s caused on my face and my mother’s face.”
