In my own small, unscientific study at a nursing home, I found 100% of women on Fosamax who suffered a fall had significant fractures. So much for the idea of retaining old, dead bone that the body would normally eliminate to "increase bone density". The proper approach is to build new, strong bone using a drug like Forteo, which is available only to the rich due to a bogus FDA study commissioned to avoid having Medicare have to pay about $7000 per year per patient by supposedly finding bone cancer in rats getting massive dosages of Forteo.

The Los Angeles Times reporters filing this story should admit that they do not have the scientific background to submit an objective story and therefore are acting as mouthpieces for the FDA and Big Pharma which have a solid track record of not curing any condition in the last half century.

Early prevention through natural means may help a great deal in possibly minimizing a person's risk of any health conditions including osteoporosis and other bone-related diseases, without the risk of side effects from drugs. Some experts note that taking medications as prevention may expose a patient to the potential side effects of a certain medication. This goes the same to people who may have been determined with osteopenia, and who may have received prescription of bisphosphonates like Fosamax. I read an article at http://www.fosamax-lawsuit.net/ some of the controversies linked to Fosamax use, it could be of great help to those who are concerned and interested.

I stopped taking Fosamax after getting severe gastrointestinal reflux and didn't start another. In the time that I did take it, i no longer had osteoporosis but now have osteopenia. My physician told me newer studies are showing this improvement with being on these meds a few years. My mother and I decided the risk of femur and mandible fractures was frequent enough on these meds to stop them besides their GI effects.

"Prevention is better than Cure".
Most osteoporosis patients take bone drugs to treat such diseases and prevent fractures, and it is disheartening to know how bone drugs may actually also cause them. Patients who may have had a first experience on this are moving forward in their legal course against these side effects. You may read information regarding fosamax legal claims here http://www.fosamaxfemurfracturelawsuit.com

New information is being constantly released and researched to find the best means of treating osteoporosis. Hopefully if early treatment is not entirely effective then early prevention will be.

At what age should you have your first bone density screening? I read if your first one is good, you don't have to have another one for a long time.
