Just listened to a caller on CSPAN who suggested that patents on drugs be reduced to 7 years. This would put generic drugs on market sooner.

Let physcians and patients decide what drug is needed, not special interest groups that continually mouth off.

This is between patient and doctor, not the government or other groups.

Stop the interference.

yeah the pharma companies spend serious $$$$ and time to invent drugs and they should have the rights to those drugs!!! maybe they will stop doing research with people like you and your attitude!!! maybe if you have been married for 7 years I should be able to be with your wife!! maybe marriage vows should only be enforced for 7 years!!!

That would be a good point if we actually bought them from there. Buy your generics from a reputable pharmacy and not off the internet and you won't have to worry.

The active ingredients are the same. The differences are things like food coloring.

Yes generics are cheaper so they save the insurance company money. However, if they didn't work, then the patient would end up back at the doctor or in the hospital which would be much more expensive for the insurance company. No rational insurance company will try to save a few $ on drugs at the cost of huge $ in hospital bills.

Generally true, but not always. Generics have a much higher % markup, but on a lower base.

1) The drug must work in the body the same as the name brand or it would not get certified as a generic.
2) They are cheaper thereby bringing down medical costs.

To bring a drug to market takes on average $350 million and 12 years of R&D (including clinical trials). Also, it is a high risk investment as you never know if the drug will make it all the way through the trials or if something will happen after it hits the market to get you sued for billions or if a competitor will bring out a superior therapy and take your market share.

While I'm in favor of generics, the brand manufacturer must be able to get a sufficient return or they will not create new drugs. I donít like that drugs are so expensive, but that is better than not having them at all.

I can't speak for Walgreens, but most of the generics we sold were from the US. There were some from Canada, a few from Europe, and a couple from an Israeli company but manufactured in the US.
