Full story: Orlando Sentinel

There are plenty of things a person will do if they think they're not being watched that they wouldn't do with someone watching them.

Copycat morons are going to drive this place right out of business.

HEY! If you're going to commit suicide, leave other people out of it. This is YOUR big drama, the rest of us don't care.

That's very true, and I completely agree with you on that point. I am curious though, have you actually ever visited a Shoot Straight? I only ask because I have, and I know when you're on the line, you are "alone" - the closest person to you is several feet behind you. IT does not take long to go from a firing stance to pointing the gun at your head.

Also, I just really believe these people would not have been deterred at all by someone else being there. They were bound and determined to complete the task they had set out to complete that day.

I'm really not trying to argue with you, I think we're both on the same page here - I just don't think having someone (Employee or otherwise) stand on the firing line would do much of anything to keep truly suicidal people from doing what they came to do.

I think the state is partially at fault for not allowing background checks (other than the 25.00 ones anyone can get) for people who want to rent guns - while that's a nice step in the right direction - it's also not going to prevent people from offing themselves - specifically if they've never had any signs in the past. Nothing would show on their check.

Ultimately, there's really little anyone can do other than decide to accept things they way they are or close the whole business down. Just so we're clear - I would like to see the former adopted by all, however I do realize that's a pipe dream...

Does anyone else realize that this kind of stuff is "trendy"? One wacko decides to do something someone has never done before, then all the wackos follow.

The real tragedy is that the fam sues the place of business and owners when things like this happen. That's so wrong! Condolences to this man's fam, but please, just grieve, and leave the lawsuits alone!

It is a shame as many people rent guns as a way of "test driving" before buying one. My wife and I have rented several as we try to find the ones that feel right in our hands. You don't go out and buy a car with out a test drive, guns are no different.

This is a mental health issue, not a gun control issue.

We don't ban tall buildings, razor blades, ropes, prescription drugs, or tailpipes.

Availability of guns has no effect on suicide rates.

There is no news story about the millions of shooting range visits that didn't end in a suicide.

I walk into a jewelry store at Millennia, there's an armed guard standing there. And last I checked, no one was ever killed by a flying diamond necklace. How such a dangerous activity can be allowed to go so relatively unmonitored bothers me a bit. There's more attention paid to kids driving the cars at the Indy Speedway ride at the Magic Kingdom than there is to people firing lethal weapons in a confined area.

There is little to no supervision at Shoot Straight, the prices are way to high and the staff just plain rude.

Why would anyone go pay their prices when there is an outdoor range close by that only charges $5 A DAY and staffed and SUPERVISED by professionals????

Shoot Straight may want to consider a move out of that building because of the morbid notoriety. As a business, I can't blame them for wanting to stop renting guns. Murder suicide cleanups are pretty expensive too.

The gun range was not to blame. They did follow guidlelines set by law.
I would like to contact them however, to see how I can get a GiftCard sent over to Casey Anthony for Mother's Day.
I love that one.... I am sure many would want to go in on that gift card too...

My heart goes out to this guys family & yes, the gun range did what they were suppose to legally do.

Armed guard at the jewelry store isn't a good comparison. No one has been killed by flying diamonds but they have been killed by diamond theifs.. and I do think that is why there is an armed guard there.

They should run a special on rental guns--1 bullet--sign a release and then be let into a locked room to get the gun. The clerk doesn't open the dor until the single shot is fired.
I see a booming business. ;-)

for some foundation: http://www.guncite.com/gun_control_gcgvsupp.h... http://www.guncite.com/gun_control_gcgvsuic.h...

Suicide fluctuates more with economic conditions than with gun ownership rates.

That is impractical, he could have shot himself regardless of having an employee in the range. I've used this range many times over the years.

It comes down to personal responsibility. I wasn't aware you could rent a gun and use it. Maybe that policy needs to change since both incidents were with rented guns. I bet this guy is a "copycat" off of the first murder/suicide.

You'd think there'd be an employee inside the range monitoring things instead of occasionally looking at a monitor.
