I have fond memories as a child, when once a year, our school would sell glazed doughnuts. My father loved them and ate them everyday. He enjoyed hanging out in the mornings at the old Maryanne's Doughnuts on Liberty near 17th street, which closed a few years back. Dad was slim and not a big eater, but he sure did love those doughnuts.

I have high blood pressure and cholesterol, so I avoid them. Indulging just once a year, shouldn't be a problem for most, provided you don't overdo. For me, a slice of toast with a trans-fat free margerine or a tiny bit of butter with powdered sugar and cinnamon satisfys my dougnut craving.

"Valleyvenus," I have good memories of fastnachts, myself - my Mom used to make them for us each year. RE this business about fats, sugars, etc - my aunts, uncles, grandparents, etc., ate lots of food w/ all of that, and most of them lived well into their 80's and 90's. My feeling is that unless a person has some really serious health problems, a fastnacht once a year shouldn't be a problem.

Who CARES about the calories, etc? All the health craves are not a good thing either, you know.

Go buy a dozen, take one out, give the rest to others and later on enjoy the treat!

Just shut up, eat the Fastnacht and get back on the health wagon later. One time won't kill anyone, for goodness sakes. They are delectable!

This article interchanges fastnacht and doughnut as if they are the same thing when there is a clear difference!

I agree with you - I get regular exercise, I eat a lot healthier than I used to, and I doubt eating a fastnacht on one day is going to do me in. If it does, well, it was my time to go anyhow (and if it IS my time to go, I'd rather my last meal be a fastnacht than oat bran!)

The article seems to imply that Lard contains trans-fats.

In fact, Lard contains only a trace amount of trans-fat.

Trans-fats come from the processing (hydrogenation) of vegetable oils.

If it's Trans-fats you're worried about, Lard is a good option for frying.

I grew up with my mom making so many fastnachts we'd all carry paper bags (grocery sized) to school for the whole class and often enough for the neighboring rooms. We loved it! I can't wait each year to get my share of the fastnachts. Sad though that many think they are just another doughnut when they are really a much yummier potato confection best served with molasses or honey........ YUM!!!

My grandmother grew up on these, and pie crust, and fried foods were all made with lard. My grandmother made them twice a year. She lived 94 years.
