"Bill Daniels Rock Palace" now that brings back memories of Allentown when it offered something to do on weekends. Rock Palace and Dorney Park dancing hall.

I wonder how my friend Billy D the younger is doing. Last I heard, he was out in San Diego. His grandfather sure had a night spot that was fun.

I was at a Roxy Concert with Billy Joel as the opening act, and remember people booing him off the stage because they wanted to see what they paid to see, some band I can't remember now. Always supposed that he disliked Allentown and harpooned us thinking that he was in Allentown, not Northampton. Might even have been Fire Sign Theater that he opened for, as I remember seeing them there.

Time for Billy Joel to pen new Allentown song

Over the years, my job has brought me into contact with some of our newest employees who require additional powered vehicle training. Many times they will ask: Is this the Allentown of Billy Joel's song?

I usually tell them, Yes, it is, but Billy Joel's' song covered the good years of the city's existence.

Billy Joel needs to update his lyrics to more closely reflect our city of Allentown today. Definitely he needs to write some lyrics to include the multiple hit-and-runs that occur daily as well as the epidemic of stolen handicapped parking permits from our most-challenged citizens, the numerous license plates cut off for their registration tags, uninsured, unlicensed drivers and jacked-up new-tired vehicles that are missing their new tires and wheels.

The drug sales, busts, gun shots and armed robberies that impact our city's citizens weekly would all surely have a place in the new lyrics.

Yes, it was an Allentown of another era when unemployment was our No. 1 concern. Now we have to worry if we will get mugged, shot, our cars stolen, our loved ones assaulted, double-parked cars and fights and assaults at our children's schools.

After spending a lifetime of 60 years living in Allentown, I believe a sad, solemn country western song of love lost would be far more fitting to describe Allentown. Or perhaps a gospel such as "Nobody Knows the Trouble We've Seen" sums it up best.

I remember being pretty broke in '74(I think), but I'd missed Billy Joel at the Roxy and NCACC so I bought 2 tickets and offered one to anyone who would drive me to Albright in Reading to see him.
It was a lot cosier than when I saw him in Ag Hall.
I'd bought my copy of "Cold Spring Harbor" at the Moravian College Bookstore - from the discount rack - and knew them all back then.

Actually, the song is about Bethlehem. However, if Joel called it "Bethlehem", it was worried that people would assume it was a religious or Christmas song. It was named "Allentown" since Allentown was close enough.

I saw Billy Joel perform in the mid to late 1970's at Albright College. Billy had just finished the concert, and as the crowd cheered him on until he came out for an encore, my friend and I had worked our way to the front at the stage.

He had a drink on the piano, and when he returned for the encore, he had a fresh drink. He came out to the audience and gave ME his old drink. I still have the plastic glass and the yellowed newspaper clipping promoting the concert. He's still one of my favorite performers. Oh, by the way, the ticket was only $5!!!

Actually, Billy Joel played in Allentown in the 1960s. Can anyone guess where?

No. And the Main Gate wasn't even there in the 1960s. Guess again.

That's why when Mayor Daddona asked Joel to create a small college scholarship for a student in Allentown bescause "Allentown" the song is about a DOWNTRODDEN TOWN, BILLY JOEL SAID NO!

Billy Joel is a drunk who had his kids taken away from him by Christy Brinkley because he wasn't safe for them to even visit them during custody visitation.

But let's tell a story about how we stuck our head in the door of somebody's dressing room and said hello. Maybe we could get a ticket stub. This town is so small time that nobody realizes that 90 miles north and 60 miles south THE BIG TIME AWAITS! kEEP wAITING fOR gUFFMAN!

Allentown DOES have a new theme song.
It's called "DUMPYTOWN" sung to the tune of "Funkytown"... Let's all sing along... Won't you take me to Dumpytown - won't you take me to ... Dumpy town - won't you take me to...
