I would just like to express my disappointment at the oversight of mentioning the lifeguards' involvement in this incident. Without Woodlawn Beach's lifeguards, who gave the victim rescue breathing and CPR, she never would have made it out of the park alive.

Our family's deepest sorrows go out to Bethany's Mom, family and friends. She's a beautiful bright light in Mrs. Bell's class. Know that an entire community mourns your loss.

I agree, a typical channel 2 story, incomplete and lacking the basic facts.

Typical Buffalo Viewer finding something to complain about and focusing on the negative...especially about something so raw and sensitive...

I thought Robyn Young did a very meaningful story well balanced with information and heart...

Don't forget they only have a couple minutes to tell the story--

Nice Job Channel Two~

Are you kidding me? A child has died and all you can think about is the fact that the "lifegaurds" should be hailed as the messiah for getting her out of the park alive???- and you are a parent of the lifegaurd perhaps? or a fellow friend? again- buffalonians looksing to complain and turb everything into a "me" contest- yeah the city of good neighbors- whatever!

As a registered nurse in an ICU in Buffalo New York, I am disgusted how you can think of yourself at a time like this. How many times have I or my co-workers saved someones life and we rarely get a "Thank You". WE DON'T EXPECT ONE", that is our job. STOP THINKING ABOUT YOURSELF. To the family of Bethany, I am sorry for your loss, her picture tells that she was a beautiful girl. You should be very proud of yourself choosing to donate tissue, that is a very hard decision to make. Know that Bethany's passing didn't happen for no reason, she saved someone elses life.

Very sad story. God bless her mother for adopting these children and giving them a better life. She is obviously a loving, giving person to be able to think of saving the lives of others in her time of grief. My heart and prayers go out to her and her family.

My heartfelt condolences to Bethany's family and friends. Such a sudden and tragic death of someone so young is difficult and yet this amazing mother made the decision to give life to another child. The video of the mother and Reverend Reid were truly inspirational.

It would be nice to see a follow up on the questions we all have about the lifeguards on duty and timeliness of arrival of help. This is not to malign or attempt to berate anyone involved. I would think there should be an investigation which focuses on "what went wrong" and/or "how to improve lifeguard services" at Woodlawn Park. It is common, if not mandatory practice in hospitals to review any incident that occurs on premises that hurt or otherwise endanger patients or employees. Places I have worked always had a staff meeting to discuss measures to prevent incidents from recurring in the future.

The truth is the girl's 12 year old sister pulled her from the water, not one of the 3 lifeguards at the water's edge.

It's quite the contrary, Disappointed Reader:
Read today's BUFFALO NEWS and get the facts. The lifeguard who was notified of this little girl's disappearance in the water did not even ENTER the water to look for her. Now, I have only a Junior Lifeguard Certification from many years ago, but I know that when an adult tells a lifeguard that a child has disapperaed in a specific section of a swimming area, the water should be checked FIRST by running, not walking, to the area where the child was last seen and searching underwater. This lifeguard wasted full minutes by calling out on a bullhorn and then walking to THE OTHER SIDE of the beach to consult with other lifeguards. The girl was found by her own 12-year-old sister. This lifeguard was very negligent and should be dismissed.

I heard the lifeguard was the cause of why she drowned. That and the fact that the sewage from the treatment plant pulled her under.

The lifeguard was the reason the rescue was ineffective. Nobody can say what would have happened had the victim been found sooner. Every minute counts and this lifeguard failed to react. I would like to hear of her dismissal or that she has had the decency to quit on her own and flip burgers for the rest of the summer instead of endangering other people's children.

1. The lifeguards needed to follow their saftey plan at the beach. IF they did not- then you can blame them. The real questions is, does NY State have an effective missing swimmer plan, and do the lifeguards practice it.
2. An "ambu bag" is not crucial to saving someone. It is possible that the beach does not have a bag; most pools and beaches do not. It is not standard equipment in NY State at beaches or pools.
3. The lifeguards are proablbly broken up and upset over this. Why would anyone assume otherswise?
