Two young men appear to be dead at the hands of the same individual. One with a gun and one with a vehicle. See following article from The Orange Leader - October 11, 2006

"Man faces manslaughter charge for OF shooting, could face another

By Debby Schamber

The Orange Leader

An 18-year-old Orangefield man was arrested Thursday afternoon and on a manslaughter charge and could face another charge of manslaughter for another incident.

Jacob Dodge’s charge stems from the Sept. 17 shooting death of 18-year-old Brandon Scott Covington of Orangefield.

“It doesn’t appear to be intentional,” said Capt. David Reeves of the Orange County Sheriff’s Office.

If convicted of the second-degree felony charge of manslaughter, Dodge faces 2 to 20 years in prison.

The additional manslaughter charge could come from a Sept. 30 wreck that killed Dustin Ousley, 20, of Orange. Officials from the Orange Police Department officials are awaiting Dodge’s blood test results to determine if he was intoxicated when the vehicle he was driving struck a pine tree.

“Once we get the results, we will turn the case over to the district attorney’s office for review,” Major Mike Broussard said.

Dodge was driving east in a 2000 Ford Expedition in the 1800 block of South Lutcher Drive at a high rate of speed, according to OPD reports, which show Dodge left the roadway, over-corrected and slid across the road and into the grass, over-corrected again, crossed the road and hit the tree.

The officer at the scene reported Dodge appeared to be under the influence of drugs and had been drinking. Ousley was pronounced dead at the scene.

Less than two weeks earlier, Orange County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a call in the 9000 block of Cajun Way and found Covington with a single gunshot wound to his upper chest.

“The victim was deceased at the scene,” Reeves said at the time.

Investigators questioned the four people present at the house at the time of the shooting to help develop their case. Dodge was one of the four."

Squeeze a trigger and the gun will go off. Drive recklessly and you will hit something. Sounds like this kid has no respect for the safety of himself or others. Unfortunately, two others paid for his actions with their lives. Now that he's 18, that "kid" excuse runs out.

Although it may appear that he doesn't have any respect for anothers safety, take it from somebody that has watched him attempt to grow up without any guidance or advice. I'm not defending his actions or the results, but it's a hard way to learn some of life's lessons. Be thankful that you apparently had the guidance, love, and strong support of a family that taught you from a young age what was right and wrong, and safe and unsafe.

That being the case, it is unfortunate, however little consolation to those who lost loved ones. Hopefully, he can make the best of the situation that he has gotten himself into and not spiral down further. Lots of folks, me included, have overcome the odds. It comes down to the decisions you make. That is how a man is judged.

I agree wholeheartedly. The sadder part is that the town he, I, and those two boys are from is a small place. Everyone knows everyone, and some of us were raised together. If Jacob doesn't wind up being locked up, he'll live with constant reminders of this everyday. Unless more of his family steps up, I'm afraid he'll wind up buried with them also.

Poor decisions. Squeeze a trigger and a gun will go off. Drive recklessly and you will hit something. All he can do now is pay his price for his crimes and try and make his life better and help others rather than hurt others. Hopefully, he will come to this realization before he makes other poor decisions.

I really miss Dustin..I don't think that it was on purpose. God took Dustin and Scott away for a reason. Jacob did not do this on purpose. I have known him since 6th grade. I don't think Jacob would do it purposely. All I know is that I miss them both, and this arguing back and forth is not going to make either one of them come back. So just leave them at rest. Stop trying to blame someone. Nobody knows what happened except them three. So just stop the arguing over this!! I love you so much Dustin and Scott. I miss you lots.

Jacob isn't a bad person. Do you even know him? How can you sit there and try to judge when you have no idea what happened? Where you there, and did you talk to anybody that was there? Why don't you give it a rest? It's not like you can change what happened or do anything about it. You are the waste of human flesh if you can't even find something more gratifing to do with your life than sit here and run down a boy that you probably don't even know.

Concerned you make some good points but you are too emotionally involved to see this from the perspective of society. One can judge him by his actions and involvement. Society can also remove him from its midst so that he can do no more harm. Hopefully, that is what the outcome will be.

I believe the back and forth zig-zag of the car leading up to the "accident" speaks volumes. Yet still he walks the streets, given an extra month to prepare for trial on the shooting (had 8 months already) and no charges filed for the wreck (either relating to intoxicated driving or something more...). It is very sad that he didn't have a better upbringing. Even so, there comes a time when each person must be held accountable for their own actions. Shouldn't that time come before any more lives are lost?
