Ignorance has raised its ugly head once again. Orangeburg has welfare recipients (like Charleston) that are both white and black. Orangeburg has its share of negatives (like Charleston). Anyone who would make a blanket statement about the residents of any city is uneducated (like yourself). If Charleston was a better place to live guess what? Not anymore (you live there now). Everyone please pray for all of the residents of Charleston, SC. They are going to need it.

I am the Orangeburg Topix Editor. First NO RACIAL COMMENTS WILL BE TOLERATED ON THIS SITE!
Secondly, I am also a Times and Democrat Newspaper Correspondent.(reporter/writer ) I've also grown up here. The people of this community, regardless of race or whether they recieve welfare is not an issue. Dave, or anyone else, if you have a race issue, the south is not where you need to be.
I have had the ability to meet outstanding people who work hard to make a living. The majority are humble and honest. Every town or city in the country has crime, and Orangeburg is no exception. Our Sheriff has done an outstanding job decreasing our crime rate!! Orangeburg City Council is doing their best, constantly trying to improve the employement rate by bringing larger companies to our area.
There is so much for our citizens to do here. No we don't have major attractions, but we do have plenty of community functions that last throughout the year. Socializing with one another brings our close nit community stronger, better.

I was born in New York, and while I've never accepted SC as my home, I can't say that
Robin is all bad. I am an African American school teacher in orangeburg. I see a lot of what negativity can bring. Please understand that God created us all. It takes a very positive person to live in the orangeburg area and find positive things to do. I don't think that Orangeburg has a whole lot to offer someone, but take the mindset that life is what you make of it. There is some good in the worst of us and some bad in the best of us. Robin, and Dave where ever you go you're going to find blacks, get to know some good ones. Don't live and the past and rely on old mindsets. This is a new day. Don't limit yourselves to thoughts of the old days unless you've had experiences to give you the mindsets that you have now. Give yourselves a chance to be truly happy with yourselves.

Years ago I dated a girl from Orangeburg and she was one of the nicest people I have known. In addtion, I have knowm several men from Orangeburg in past years, who were fine folks. I think life is what you make it, and every day is filled with choices. I am sure that the people in Orangeburg are happy with your choice, though maybe not the people in Charleston

Well Dave I'm Happy that the move to Charleston was good for you but I Happen to think the complete opposite about Orangeburg. Apparently you have never lived outside of South Carolina to appreciate what being or living in the south has to offer. It's only boring because of people like you who move away and don't give back to the communities like a good person should.... but don't get me wrong I'm not saying that you aren't a good person. I do agree that some people get comfy being on welfare and they shouldn't but really its not them.... It's the opprotunity that they are deprived from. And if you have a decent job then good for you but not every one is that lucky. Please put yourself in the shoes of others before you make comments that may disturb someone.

November Lane - I think its fine to delete racist comments. However, any discussion of Orangeburg that doesn't address race is really not a discussion at all - its sticking your head in the sand.

Have you ever shopped at the Orangeburg Wal Mart, November? Do you know its the absolute worst Wal Mart in America when it comes to theft & loss? The worst. I could talk about this race or that race, but look for yourself? The parking lot isn't safe after dark, either. That's Orangeburg in a nutshell for you.

As far as crime and drugs are concerned. Orangeburg has the worst drug problem in the south. You could blame it on the colleges or the 301-I-95 connection. But, it goes deeper that that. I wonder what the Sherrif is doing about it? Maybe he has his own reasons to let it continue. It wouldn't surprise me. Crooked shenanigans, back door politics, and outright theft are commonplace in local and county governments in this part of the country - maybe it always has been - and only the skin color has changed. Still, while race isn't the primary factor..the places with the worst poverty and the worst schools are also the places where African Americans have been elected. Don't believe me...Look at the mess developing in Santee or what is left of communities like Vance. Race is a very important ingredient in the mix and it should be discussed.

While I don't think the grass is that much greener anywhere else in the South. Dave has a point -- Orangeburg is particularly bad. You can all dismiss it as racism if you like, or you can check it out for yourself...just walk around the Wal Mart for a while and listen to the shoppers and employees. Pay attention to what people are buying and whether they are paying for it themselves or with a Welfare card. You will be shocked. That's Orangeburg. And it stinks.

I actually was born and raised in Charleston. I lived there for 30 years. Charleston is a wonderful place to live, I agree. I have lived in Orangeburg for the last 3 years and have no intentions to ever move. I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I

VS2-Wendell makes many valid points. I was born & raised just outside of O'burg and will never move back because of all the crime due to the blacks. They have an attitude & think the whites there owe them something. I do not like to visit family there anymore for the same reasons. I went to one of the private schools there and one of the reasons why was due to the thuggery, etc at Orangeburg Wilkinson not to mention the rather un-educated staff/teachers there. The colleges there are a joke too! Unfortunately, many whites are like myself & have moved away only to let the blacks ruin what's left of the town. I wonder what the population percentage these days are white vs black...20% vs 80%. Orangeburg was once a charming, neat little town many years ago but is nothing of it's former self. Once a proud O'burger, I shudder & am ashamed to admit I was born & raised there these days! Goodbye forever Oburg & good luck...you need it!

in south carolina sometimes the allegation alone is enough for probable cause and issuing an arrest warrant. until this man goes to trial and is convicted by a 12 panel jury you really don't know the guilt or innocence of the defendant. law enforcement is having a field day making these arrests because all they need is the allegation from the child. children lie for many reasons: to get something they want, to get out of trouble, to get attention, etc. don't rush to judgment here - remember the duke rape case!

Red, Dave and Robin,

Why don't you all go and climb into the back of a pickup and shoot each other.........several times. Come on, you can't tell me you haven't met someone of your own race that is a total and absolute waste of air? Get over the race thing and move on. If you're getting a bad response or vibe from someone, check into yourself and ask why are they acting this way towards me? Most of the time it's you that brings it on. Charleston is a good place to live.......I hear.

There were some harsh words about Orangeburg, SC. I lived there all through grammer school and it has changed since the 80's and times now are very hard due to economic downfall there....not everyone wants to be a teacher and lets face it...The Prince of Orangeburg Mall does not have a Nordstroms or a Saks..or can do the residents shop there?....
It is what it is and for those who love it there, more power to them... I had to get away from there and Northern Va is treating me well.LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!
