It took a bystander to get the purse back. Thanks to the Bystander. Its a wonder the Sheriffs office Investigator Earnest Malone doesn't arrest the bystander for obstruction.

It does not surprise me that a bystander had to return the purse. The sheriffs office and employees are worthless,I have lived there a little over two years and all i have seen them do is run other cars off the road when they are supposidly "responding to calls" and race up and down the road exceeding the speed limit far more that what Va code states. with due regard to person or property, i have yet to see any of them actually do their job and uphold the law, not break it just cause they wear a badge and think that they are better than everyone else.

After living in Orange the past few years and then working at the high school for 2 years, I have made it my mission to get my house sold! The Town of Orange is becoming the armpit of central Virginia - homes are becoming run down, there's nothing to attract anyone to the area, and at any point in the day you can find vagrant males wandering the streets. This article doesn't suprise me - I'm sure they went to the high school.

The only attraction that Orange can claim are the surrounding estates. Thats it. Downtown is a sewer full of rats, badges and all.

I have lived in Orange County my entire life and I always said growing up I couldn't wait to leave this town but as I got older I wanted to raise my children here....WELL, I am beyond embarassed to even admit that I grew up here. Our Sheriff's Office here is a joke, and thats putting it mildly! Our Sheriff has no idea how to conduct himself in public and if his wife doesnt tell him what to say and when to speak it doesn't get done and our deputies have lost their minds. Once you give these children, and yes I mean children with no experience, fresh outta school a badge it goes straight to their head and they have no regard to the citizens or their safety. As far as an earlier blog from "Go Bystander" the officer that ran someone off the road in this county is the 2nd in command so now you see how this Sheriff's Office is conducted, so as far as the purse snatching issue being solved, they will have to either bring in the citizens academy cadets to solve the crime or more bystanders!

It is true, there is nothing in Orange County and I have also lived here all of my life. It's a shame this county continues to be in state of regression instead of progression. There were more activities/places here 40 years ago than now. And it doesn't help that the Food Lion parking lot is completely dark at night! Don't we all pay enough to our "one and only" grocery store for them to turn the freakin' lights on?

You are so right about the Food Lion parking lot. There is no excuse for that parking lot to be so dark.

One of those vagrants used to have a car and worked at Clores repair shop a few years ago. Anyone know the story on what happened to this guy?

The problem with Orange has always been that a few people own everything and they don't want any competition to come in and affect their wallet. These same people buy up a lot of rental properties and turn them into slums. They also run for elected positions to continue to benefit themselves and hamstring anyone who tries to make them follow the rules. I think the guy you are talking about lost his wife due to his drinking and just gave up.

In case that those of you complaining about the Sheriff don't know, he won the recent election by getting roughly 74% of the vote. Now I don't know about the rest of you but I would say the main majority of citizens of Orange County must think he is doing a pretty good job.

I guess Malone isn't there any longer. That is a step in the right direction. Maybe the Sheriff "is" getting smarter.

The problem with crime in Orange is Dianna Wheeler, the Commonweath's attorney. She is only interested in pursuing the cases that will get her media attention. I reported a crime to her and she asked me to write a lengthy report rather than have a sheriff come and take one! It was such an unpleasant experience, that I gave up, which is what, I am sure, she was banking on. Old money rules this county!
