Why would they waste their time walking around the Quabbin?

What they should be doing is educating themselves instead of showing their ignorance. Active forestry including harvesting of timber has been going on since the Quabbin was created- and it is an example of a very healthy forest- though it might not be pretty here and there every 20-40 years. The managers know what they are doing and that is to meet their goal of protecting and enhancing Boston's water supply. They are'nt making money from these timber cuts- it is a drop in the bucket... what they are doing is good for the land.. these "eco-nazis" should learn the facts instead of crying "Burn The Witch" with the rest of the uninformed mob.

It didn't take me long to find evidence against your wildly inappropriate rant. Here's wikipedia and if that's not good enough the next is from the UNEP going on and on about the negative effects of deforestation on water quality.

Just because something has been "going on since..." doesn't mean it's correctly managed or even correct at all. Especially if this is just a "drop in the bucket" then why don't they listen to the people protesting if it's not financially worth it to go through the trouble.

Don't forget the links.

Wildly inappropriate?

Hey excuse me and my absence from this topic- I've been elsewhere in the blogoshpere, but felt the need to respond when I saw your comments.

Your links are B.S. "Clear cutting" as practiced on the Quabbin is NOT "deforestation"... it's going to result in regeneration (look up "reforestation") of new healthy tree stands, and increased production of clean water for Boston!

It's not a money making proposition- the must do it under their mandate to provide the best water supply possible for oston... so any arguments about dirty money just don't belong.

Now, back to my granola...

p.s. the deer herd loves the logging activities, and I love deer, they're delicious!

That's what a 4th grade education will do for you. Again I say, educate yourselves. The damage is done, the dirt has been dug, The quabbin, AFTER they screwed the poor folks living in those towns they stole and inundated(there's some out of control government for you), has been nothing but beneficial for all the people in Massachusetts.... well, I guess they used to call that progress...

Cutting trees? Oh, I'm sorry, you thought wood came from the lumber yard?

What's wrong with responsible forest management and cutting trees? Do you live in a wood house, read the paper, wipe your behind with paper? We need wood! Boston needs clean water, hey, guess what, we have both! It is done responsibly- yes, even the clear cutting! Wildlife, water quality, forest and watershed science, and the local forest-based industry has benefitted greatly from the management and clear cuting, not only the Boston dwellers. As we say in New Hampshire..Live Free or Get Over It!
