ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- Two teams on opposite ends of the women's basketball spectrum meet today for the first time at The Pit in the NCAA Tournament.

North Carolina has built a home in the national rankings with a foundation of high school All-Americans.

Fresno State can only stare from below at the Top 25 as it searches every nook and cranny for suitable players to fit coach Adrian Wiggins' system.

"I love this time of year. It's what you work for and all about competing for a championship," Tar Heels 25th-year coach Sylvia Hatchell said Friday.

Hatchell, of course, is talking about a national championship, which her 1994 team won 60-59 over Louisiana Tech. And that's the rub for Fresno State. Every ounce of focus by the Bulldogs today will be concentrated on winning their first NCAA Tournament game.

Bulldogs women's hoops looks to keep winning ways

Women's basketball team confident of talent to replace five seniors.

Fresno State's seniors set a standard in their four seasons that might not ever be duplicated on the basketball court.

They captured multiple Western Athletic Conference women's championships, made four consecutive trips to the NCAA Tournament and won 97 games as a group.

But there are no encores left after this 25-8 season.

Sixth-year coach Adrian Wiggins now faces the job of restocking his shelf with talent to remain a consistent player in conference and on the national stage.

He said that task won't scare him off to greener pastures.

Fresno State coach Adrian Wiggins will have to look to the likes of freshman Taylor Thompson next year after losing five seniors.

"We have a vision in our program of being one of the best in the country, and that doesn't happen overnight," he said after Saturday's first-round loss to North Carolina in the NCAA Tournament.
