So I was in the store this week and overheard some people talking about the Oran Fire Department. I overheard that they now have a new tanker but that it is already out of service.

I want to know what the hell are they thinking. They already had one truck mess up and almost kill two people. Someone needs to get thier head on straight before someone else gets hurt.

I am sorry to post about this but something needs to be done. I realize they are there to help us in Oran, and also they may not have much money, but damn. Whos on the damn fireboard and who the hell is taking care of this stuff? And I say if it can't be taken care of right, when is the next fireboard election??

We bought a USED tanker so there are unknown problems when purchasing used. The leaf springs need to be replaced.

I, as chief thought that I would much rather put the truck out of service than take a chance on having another accident involving one of our trucks. Obviously I can not make a decision that makes everyone happy.

We have an election for a board member every year so this December you are more than welcome to enter your name for the election.

AS MUCH as I would love to get on here and debate everything we do, I will not. As I have posted on several forum post you or anyone else are more than welcome to contact me by one of the following methods.

If you are a certified heavy duty truck mechanic or have the funds available to purchase a new tanker (approx.$150,000) please let me know.

Well I can see where Townie is coming from really. Of course the oran department doesn't have $150,000. It would stand to reason a town this size would not. But with what little they may or may not have, they do need to be selective and check things out better. Because of what little they do have, a little can go along way if used appropriatly. Even used things can be good if checked out well enough. How well was it checked out?

Well I am sure they would be more than happy to let you go and check out the next used item they buy and then with your expert skills you could guarntee them that there would not be anything EVER wrong with the items.

So, what you are saying is because they dont get payed for going and checking out the equipment they shouldnt worry about safty, I think not everything needs to be safe from bumper to bumper because there is not a set price on someones life. And as I have seen before since I grew up in Oran, there used to be firefighters out by the bank collecting money like the girls have been for the last 2 weekends for donations heck I believe chairity is even how they got there first set of extrication tools what ever happened to fill the boot for the equipment,

So are you saying it wasn't checked out? Because the guys on the department aren't paid? That is not very good reasoning???? I hope your not on the department.
Thanks Mr. Watkins for letting me know when the elections are held. And please know I am not in any way shape of form downing you as a person. That is not my intentions. Thanks for your reply. And I do appreciate your efforts. But I am concerned.

Not saying that at all, saying when "concern" goes and checks out the next piece of equipment and donates his/her time that I thank them.

Well it stands to reason someone qualified would need to check it out. And there are places where these things can be done.

Wait a minute now folks, before this thread gets turned into all of the rest, I (James Watkins) went and checked this truck out and I am the only one who saw it in person before it was bought. This truck was in Northern Ohio and yes I obviously missed the leaf springs. I take sole responsibility for this truck since it was approved by the board at my request. So if the engine blows up the next time it is used then there we go (but it did make the 600 mile trip back).

Townie,
If you have any suggestions I am more than happy to here them at any time and I am very serious about that. I/We are open to any suggestions on how we can improve the service we provide. Again, I will attach some basic contact information and will even go as far as saying look at
oranfire dot com for email information for me but beware we do get a lot of spam so please make the subject line "spam proof".

Crazyone,
I'm sure you meant that you think everything needs to be safe from bumper to bumper, I also think this and that is why this tanker was taken out of service. As far as charity is concerned I know that the fire district will accept any donated funds at any time. As far as "filling the boot" well, we all have demands on our time just as you do and I would much rather for the firefighters to be training than out soliciting money since we are tax based. Just for clarification it was the Oran Rescue Squad that got the monies for the Hurst Rescue Tools and the rescue squad disbanded due to finances around six or seven years ago.

Everyone,
This tanker will not be placed back into service until it is repaired and I find it disappointing that we were without a tanker for going on five months and it did not raise an eyebrow. Also, we spend around $10,000 a year (yes $10,000) for insurance (fire, liability, etc for vehicle and building PLUS workmans comp) so if we have to make a choice on letting one truck or two sit until we have the money, or pay the insurance, well I'm paying the insurance.

Ok people we heard it here. There are things we as community members of oran need to be concerned about and things we need to help with, this is one.

So Im putting out the call, lets put on our thinking caps and see how we can help this department, any ideas anyone?

We as a community can help somehow so lets all figure out how.

Its something we as a community need. So with that need we need to help.

well 1422 stay on topic here there was nothing even mentioned about the new tanker being out of service, It is good that it is out of service, what Townie was talking about however is the fact that it was bought in that kinda condition, that is what concerned them because they dont want to see Oran Fire department plastered all over the news because of faulty equipment that ended up killing someone.

I believe that chief Watkins has said it time and time again. we work on a LOW budget. If you have any ideas OR think you can do a better job then Chief. The oran fire protection district is always accepting application. It doesn't matter what we do as a department it will NEVER and i'll say NEVER satisfy everyone. AS far as the department is concern we are happy with what chief watkins has done for the department.
Crazyone,
You seem to be an expert scroll up and write down the contact info. If you happen to find a truck in our budget that is perfect feel free to let us know. Also getting on here and complaining will do nothing for We will be awaiting your call.
community member,
If anybody does have any idea let us know we will be happy to check out the ideas. We appericate thought.
I will also post the contact info

To the fire department.

I see that atleast three of the firefighters have got here to defend themselves. To Chief Watkins and Batt Cief some of us are proud to have a fire department as good as ours. The ones that want to complain about stuff that JUST takes a little time to fix go to the surrounding departments look at there stuff. To the two chiefs you guys work hard and attempt to do the right thing but it happens to back fire in your face keep in mind people in Oran will never be happy. For example look at the old police Chief we had they complained about him now they complain about Gregg and Steve. You guys just do what you think is right for the TAX PAYERS. I'm sure these people complain about everything in town. But it is good to know when the board elections are would one of you two mind stating when the board meetings are is in with the monthly city meeting? I tried to call the number you both left but its an answering machine and all i had was the question on board meeting.

Thank you and God bless you men and women

If you are not satisfied with the Oran Fire Department, get off your behind and do something to make it better, like, oh I don't know make a donation, join and go through all of the training and go on all of those unpaid calls and meetings while holding down a job and taking care of your family.
