I think it is interesting that all of the complainers can't spell or use good grammar...didn't take advantage of the schools in Opp, right? My Dad graduated from Opp High school and there is a good education there, if people care enough to study and avoid "coke" and other drugs. If your SSI and welfare checks aren't enough, by all means, hit the road out of Opp, preferably to somewhere out of Alabama!

I have lived in Opp all my life (42 years). Much to everyone's surprise, we have running water, electricity, telephones, paved roads, and they have even piped in sunshine! I love my hometown even if there is not rapid growth in industry. Larger towns are close enough by and I love the small town atmosphere where traffic is not always congested and red lights are not 10 minutes long. Opp is a small, friendly southern town where most people know each other and live comfortably. To those who chose to leave...you're probably right where you need to be. Those that live here and continue to complain about how they are treated need to live a more respectful, Christian life and then they would not have any need to complain about the police and the judges would they? God helps those who help themselves. However, if you're not content here....the highway leads out the same way it comes in.
Hey Ann, I like your style. Dr. Martin Luther King always said 'let a man be judged by the content of his character and not the color his skin'. It seems character issues never find their way into the racial battles nowadays. My life growing up in Opp was not perfect either, but people respond to courtesy and rudeness pretty much the same wherever you go. I agree, some people could give some behavior modification a try.

I totally agree with you on this. If you choose to live in Opp,then in my opinion you are agreeing to all of the backward thinking. I left 26 years ago and currently I live on the East Coast and likly will for the rest of my life. Crap happens here too. It is the choices you make that makes you different.

It is disheartning to read the negative comments about my home town but having been away for a very long time, I'm not experienced in the waywardness of the law, difficulties in paying a utility bill or the town's folk animonsities towards the Blacks. I think the later comment is said and is being said in every city in the USA and will continue to be said despite what changes are made. Some folk just like to shout Oppression as an excuse not to improve themselves and because that's all they know. Opp certainly doesn't have a thing to do with that as there are school loans available to assist.

What I do know is that Opp is a friendly, wholesome little town but seems to turn its back on economic growth, i.e., missing the opportunity to encourage new businesses, whereby, its people can prosper by gainful employment. This, can in part, be due to the loyalty shown by the local dignitaries in keeping Opp a small town where people that have been in business all their lives, can continue to do so...but think of the revenue that Wal-Mart would have created, had this same committee allowed it to build in Opp rather than Andalusia.

When visiting, we notice that all restarants are filled to capacity especially on the weekends. Can't say the food is that great but are frequented from necessity. With this in mind, it seems that someone, somewhere, could see the need for additional eating establishments and do whatever necessary to bring them in. Surroundings towns get our business.

I have just read all 24 posts on this particular "topix." I do agree with most of the negative opinions on this thread, and mostly none of the postives. Ok so maybe "coke" isn't too intelligent and maybe his posts didn't make much since, but that doesn't detract from the other people's negatives opinion of Opp. The last few posts gave me a sick taste in my mouth. I think the negative reflection of Opp is partially because of the last few posts. You (or 'yall) are the reason people think its prejudice. Your words give off an air of I'm-better-than-you, an air that is so think in Opp its suffocating. And hey look at me: I retain a negative opinion of Opp and I have propper grammer and can spell! So I guess that throws that one guy's smart-ass comment out the (Microsoft) window, huh. Look folks, Opp is extremely prejudice, period. Hell, even you folks with the "propper grammer" shouldn't argue that, it's fact. Opp's not only prejudice against blacks, it's prejudice against poor people in general. If you're not rich in Opp then you are nobody, and if your nobody, you get frowned upon. You all know this, stop acting like you don't. I think you are truely the idiots in this forum if you think otherwise. All my life I have lived in Opp. Most people that live in Opp has. It's a black whole in which few can escape. The ones that do are glad to, just read the above comments. And yes, THE LAW IS CORRUPT in Opp. Just look at the girl that said her father left the OPD because of the foul play. How can you dispute that, he's a friggen cop too! OPD cops ride around in opp looking for white teenagers to pull over leaving the hood so they can harass them because they are too scared to actually go into the hood and get the dealers. And have you seen the so-called the Bio-diesel plant? ITS A PLASTIC BUILDING with 2 gates saying "keep-out" on them, yet there are no fences, so you can just drive around the gate! They are just trying to act like they're building something so they can get that 40 mil grant from the government and split. There are not going to be any jobs from that. The mayor's in on it too. It's a joke. The whole town is a joke. There is no opportunity in Opp. There is Racism. There is cooked cops. There is 20 churchs in a square block yet nowhere for the teenagers to hang out- and you wonder why your son is on drugs.

That last post quite frankly shut the house down. It was a huge "BOO-YAH" in the face of the posts before it. It made me want to go to up just to shake the guy (or girl's) hand. Well said, well said.

I was raised in Opp! My father was a policeman there and he quit the force because it was as crooked as the whole town was!!!! I learned just in the past year that there is so much drama in that town....like a soap opera with liars, trouble making idiots and drug attics live there now that must have nothing better to do in. Everyone sleeps with everyone there! I would never go back! My sister moved away from there recently and I thank GOD for that!!!!
Excuse.. I've been raised in Opp and I can tell you this white girl didn't sleep with everyone here...
