There is a reason that everybody wants it gone. This isnt a racist thing either, I have friends that participate in this that are white. This year when it ended, I saw litter everywhere on the road. Yeah, they may bring money to Opelousas, but then Opelousas also has to spend money to clean up everything that is left over from the ride. I think it is a great idea for them to ban it. They have had several problems with this ride and it is definitely time that it ends. And "cowgirl" whoever you are, Opelousas is not the country! Lebeau, Prairie Rhonde, and Grand Prairie, places like that are the country.

Know that the sheriff shut down the Pecaniere trailride for similar concerns. That was one of the larger white trail rides. Just ant you to know that before you start spouting off about racist politicians.

I think that every group, no matter racial background, should have the right to peaceful assembly. Also people should take into account their own boundaries so far as property is concerned and protect their own. If you dont want to see whats going on outside of your property, put up a fence, or if some one is vandalizing it take action against that person, not everyone was being reckless or violent or lewd but it is portrayed as such. In every group there will be bad apples, those "traditional" rides during Mardi Gras are no exception simply because theyve been around longer, they too are plauged by the ignorance that SOME exemplify; of which examples are on display in this forum. As for the public intoxication, as long as alcholic beverages are sold at each corner, convience, and grocery store their will be drunk people of ALL races. This epidemic is not limited to people riding horses or trailrides in general, it affects us daily as a society.

But none talks about those sort of things or issues. Noone wants to talk about how black folks property was destroyed by white people and also stolen. No this is not a racial issue but i have trouble believing that this is that much of a problem because of trash or traffic problems. What about parades? Traffic problems. What about festivals? Destructs property. So how can those be acceptable and this not? There is just as much history and cultural benefits here with this trailride as the annual festivals we love so much. The only difference is that the Step n Strut is still in infancy stages and it is already bigger than most area festivals. I think this had as much to do with its demise as it being ran by black people. I digress and hope that a recount can be placed in effect to the parish gov. and the "tradition" of the step n strut trailride and all area gatherings continue to grow and prosper for years to come. I also hope that the people that attend and spectate can become more responisble for their own property and possesions, and rely on themselves to defend and protect their rights.
