A movie theatre or anything else nice in this town would be ruined because the police do not give a damn. It would become a haven for the drug dealers and real criminals.

I agree, I wish for my daughter's sake there was more to do up here. I take her on a lot of trips to broaden her horizons, but I am blessed with means to do so.
Others up here are not so lucky. And basically, the PD does not want to do their job. Most of them anyway. I know of ONE truly nice officer up here.
So I am really afraid that anything "good" up here would go "bad" very soon.

i really dont know what is happen to our town people are moving out of there building and nothing is being done to get other stores. they dont try to get a good gro. store. if it not a fast food place or a gas store and they talk about going up on the tags when they know people can not buy much gas yes the road needs fixing but this money would not go to the roads because the people we got in there is for a big show insead of helping the people. home owers can not fit all of the bills.

i wish they would build a movie theater
in ashville because there isn't anything to do unless you go out to gasden or trussville or somewhere else. and the way gas prices are now i would like to stay close to home.

Thinking and Devyn, I agree with you both, there is so little for the decent teens of this town to do, so they get mixed up with drinking and drugs, because of boredom.

If I had the money, I would open up a teen recreation center and hire private guards to keep it safe. Lord knows we cannot depend on the police here.

Perhaps a few folks in this town, including myself could brainstorm and get somethings going for entertainment. Drugs and all are ruining these good towns. And the police sit and take the easy ride....writing speeding tickets and all.

Betty: 3 things..... 1) learn to spell - 2) city council election qualification times were posted so any Oneonta resident who met the qualifications could have entered the race for the Mayor's office if they wanted to - 3)the city council has NOTHING to do with the increase in tag fees to fund the necessary road maintenance costs that the COUNTY has to burden with rising petroleum costs

yes you are right i should learn to spell but maybe it was hitting the wrong keys. yes i know it was posted but it was real quite that the mayor that is in there was not going to run ray has been heard saying it did not want to tell what job he had after leaving the office he had maybe he did not want anybody to run agaist him. i know the city council does not have anything to do with the increase in tag fees. but they do have the job to fix the roads in oneonta and to serve the people not what they want.

As I said on another discussion, I used to live in Oneonta years ago. We moved to an Atlanta suberb in 1980 or 81. Been so long I can't remember.

It's sad to hear how things are going there now. I think this kind of thing happens in many small towns.

You should really try to organize a group of concerned parents and go to your major, Board of Commissioners, etc., and change things. You need activities for your teenagers that are safe, fun and supervised.

Do you have PTA's, PTO's in your schools? They should be willing to help you. They're service organizations and usually the local government officials will listen to them.

I know it's easy for me to offer this advice since I don't live there, but I believe if you can get a group of parents involved that feel strongly about change, you can do some great things. Just remember to state your opinions calmly and don't "attack" anyone.

You also could work with churches in your area.

Good luck!
