I am so thrilled that some hillbilly from kentucky wants to enlighten me.
You would stand there and watch your neighbors house burn down because they didn't pay up but you would call me a hillbilly? If grabbing a bucket of water rather than picking my nose in an emergency makes me a hillbilly then a hillbilly I am and thanks for the compliment.

he was sent 3 letters reminding him of his fire dues, after that they called him 3 times and each time he said he would come and pay tomorrow, after the third phone call the dept dropped his name off the list.
The fact of starting a fire in burn barrel when we have not seen rain in two months is not that smart anyways, it then spread to a shed and after 30 minutes of trying to put out the shed he finally calls 911 knowing quite well they failed to pay for the subscription.
The FD did respond after a paying neighbor called that the fire was spreading toward their house and they responded and extinguished the grass fire and then returned to quarters. They did not stand there and watch it burn.
Three hours after the fire the son goes to the fire station begins to punch the fire chief while his wife and young son look on. The chief had to go to the hospital and have surgery and Mr. Cranicks son arrested for felony aggravated assault.
NOW..that being said....IF the fire dept HAD gone against job description and decided to take action, which of you armchair firefighers thinks you would be doing ANY good?
A trailer that's on fire is a total loss..period, a trailer that's on fire for 5 minutes will not be saved, nor will anything inside.
When the fire crew arrived, there was no reason to fight the fire, there was nothing to save, it was too far gone, no chance that the dogs would have survived the smoke inhalation, much less the fire..
the county is the guilt party for depending on the other jurisdictions to protect them. For having a "paper" fire dept
The family is guilty for not paying their bill.
The family is guilty for wait 2 hrs to call 911 in the first place, before it was a total loss.
Fire dept was following protocol.
If your neighbor has pays somebody to come cut their grass, are you entitled to have your cut for free too? Same thing..you provide money, they provide a service
Thank you. It's only indicative of the majority of today's society that they want something for nothing all the time. So many whine and complain that Government butts their nose into everyone's business, and yet the minute some fool can't handle his own responsibility of taking care of his own property, the same whiners are screaming the Government did nothing. The harsh reality of responsibility seems to be far too overwhelming for many to handle, or even understand the concept of handling. It's scary to think these very whiners have the right to vote and the capability of propagating the next generation.

Not much. It goes into a pool, to help maintain equipment, purchase fuel, and overhead expenses.
It costs much more than $75 to respond to an incident, be it a car accident or a fire.
Fuel, wear and tear on vehicles, equipment, turn out gear, etc.
thanks

I hear ya. We pay taxes on taxes in NY, but one thing for sure, my house won't burn down because some good old boy doesn't understand basic economics and can't come up with a plan to see that all residents are treated fairly.

Mr Cranick needs a good attorney. Then once his attorney is finished with the civil suit, Mr. Cranick's insurance company will subrogate, and then thier $400. an hour attorneys will come into town and get whatever is left.

The 75.00 decision the chief made is about to cost him thousands, and probably his job too. He sure lost in the court of public opinion.

WOW!! Over $75 cooome on!

Ok the the call comes in FIRE, wait lets check the list first. Thats just messed up!

Was the chief using these people as an example like a scare tactic let it burn, now maybe the rest of the residents will pay on time!

If my pets died in this manner and they just stood there, I would have been arrested!

I rely on the great Volunteer fire dept we have in my County they would NOT STAND DOWN! Thats a fact..

BTW DC area and VA have been covering this story.

If a fire department wants to call itself a "Volunteer" Fire Department, well, what does "Volunteer" mean in the "Volunteer" state? Pay me first?

If they don't pay and the fire department still puts the fire out, why would ANYONE pay?
This is in the country, not the city. NO city taxes paid. If you live out in the country, take steps to protect yourself. Pay the $75, or plan to fight the fire yourself.
Simple!
You think your logic is tight but this isn't a matter of logic. It is a matter of human and public concern. Someone could have been in the home. Following you logic, if a person is in harms way needing rescue but has failed to pay some fee to governance than they should perish? Fire is also a public danger, had not the structure been alone, consider if it were adjacent to other structures endangered.
This is really a matter of poor governance. Either-or provisions in paying for property and life protection is something more akin to a third world nation. Assessment for the $75 from others means such as insurance or property lien could have been written into the local law. This example and the replies to it really show how divided and on the way down this country has become. People, we are in this together or we are no longer a community.

Well, it surely follows the Bush mentality, "I got's mine, you get yours/my way or the highway/I don't give a damn what the citizens think, I get to make the decisions because "I am the Decider"! Well, we are all suffering from Bush decisions from the economic collapse to two bungled and useless/expensive/expensive/ex pensive wars which really aren't wars.

If you look at the history of fire departments in this country you will see that this is precisely what was done for many years. They were private businesses and if you didn't have their medallion on your house they would do nothing. We have come up with a much better system called socialism in which the fire fighting organization is paid out of common funds and puts out anyone's fires. It is a system that has proven to be efficient and reliable everywhere.

Then they shouldn't have responded at all. They knew at the station and all the way there that the guy owed the fee. They drove out there in their big deisel truck, guzzling rather expensive fuel and putting wear on an even more expensive Fire Engine just so they could drive out there and watch the house burn.
No, you schmucks can nay-say till your dead and gray and those scumbags are still gonna get it for what they did (didn't) do. This is because no matter how many scumbags say the guy "had it coming" There's always going to be 5 more people waiting to point out that it was wrong. Because it was wrong. It is an immutable fact that surrounds this matter. The firefighters had a duty and an oath that they needed to take more seriously than some fee that doesn't even cover the cost of one deployment to a COVERED fire.
If what they did was right, then why is THE ENTIRE COUNTRY up in arms about this? I suppose we are all crazy and your staunch minority opinion should be dominant?
My suggestion is to just cross your arms and huff and puff about it because the powers that be are going to sh*tcan those fools because that is what they are and that is what they deserve. They are fire fighters....They need to fight fires, not demand money. If that were the case they would be called Fire Control Merchants.
Well Einstein, the Fire Department was responding to a call from a paid subscriber to protect his property from a fire on the property of the idiot who didn't pay the fee. Legally the Fire Department had no obligation to put a drop of water on anything but the paid subscribers property. As for the moral value, there was no danger to human life when the Fire Dept. arrived, as the animals were already dead. The irresponsible property owner lost property he failed to insure with a $75 fee. That is the simple fact.
You really need to stop listening to the voices in your head; they are wrong. Again.

I agree with you ! You know what really makes me sad, the perception of my state from those in the rest of the country is that we are peopled by ignorant rednecks and hillbillies who marry their kinfolks. We have tried to downplay these steriotypes for generations and I thought we had made some progress. Then along comes this debacle, created by an out of control fire chief, a spineless County Commission and a few gutless firefighters,(and I use the term loosely) and the harsh light of media attention worldwide is shined on Tennessee. Then we have a group of Topix posters who cheerlead for more of this behavior and seem to revel in the fact that this happened, as the rest of the country chuckles at their ignorance.
