I witnessed an altercation at yesterday's wrestling match at the Otto Shortell Middle School. Three students were involved and this never should have happened. Two of the team members get attacked by by a third student for no reason at all. Coach sends third student to bleachers to break it up and allows the other two boys to stay with the team. Shortly after the principle who has not yet spoke to the coach takes the three boys out in the hall and gives them a three day suspension and says he needs to speak to the district superintendent. As a result the suspension is increased to FIVE days. The third student who was the cause has had numerous referrals and sat in the bleachers shouting obscenities and then removed himself to the locker room. The other two boys are twins. One has a 97 GPA and had a perfect attendance which now he will no longer enjoy and one referral because he went to the bathroom before reaching his classroom. The other won the spelling bee and was to attend another spelling bee in Syracuse which he now also cannot participate.
I am outraged to think such harsh punishment has been dished out to these 12 yr. olds when an in school suspension would have clearly been sufficient.
Especially, since two high school girls were in a fist fight about three weeks ago on the bus returning from BOCES and they only received a THREE day suspension and that was much worse due to one of the girls swinging to hit the other and missed. In doing so she hit another student giving him a bloody nose if not broken. Oh maybe these girls were children of one of the faculty members. It does make a difference you know.
Incase you're wondering, yes I am the twins GRANDMOTHER and am very proud of their accomplishments.

this happens all the time . If you have the right family or influence you get better treatment. A couple of years ago there was an incident at the bus stop wher a student was hurt. It was swept under the rug because one of the kids was a valesky and one had a trooper for a father. I would fight for these boys . Don't let the school bully you

Oh, trust me we are fighting for them and I'm seriously thinking about contacting my attorney to see exactly what kind of action their mother and I may be able to take against the school district!

The problem with education does not lie with its teacher or the content. The problem lies with mindset that so many kids coming into ours schools with. They undermine the authority of the adults in their building, and take no accountability for their actions. Unfortunately the problem lies with the fact that parents take the side of the kid and therefore set the precedent for undermining authority. Instead of a teachable moment you have a case of parents questioning the school and district, and that slowly seeps its way into the classroom.

not when authority is in the wrong. When kids are getting punished for things they shouldn't. It is not about undermining anybody when it comes to unfair punishment or favoritism

Thank you!! People who have authority let it go to their heads and don't weigh the facts that should go with the violations because they feel they don't have to answer to anyone because of the position they hold. WRONG PEOPLE!!!!!

In this case, how would you know the past of the others involved? You seem to be taking a lot of stake in the truth of a 12 year old. Instead of a teachable moment to change future actions and avoiding future problems you resort to an online forum to air dirty laundry. I fail to see the logic.

How do you compare a very minor altercation between 12 yr olds who really did nothing and get 5 day suspension to two senior high school girls in a physical fight on the school bus and give an innocent student a bloody nose and yet they only get 3 day suspension!!!!! I fail to see any justification there if you compare the two incidents. I said I witnessed the whole incident and besides their mother was also on the scene.

she said she wittanesed it which means she was there and seen it. Not just going by the word of a child. You keep saying to make this a teachable moment. I think she is by teaching them when something isn't fair to fight for yourself. Sometimes it takes a public forum to bring these situations to light. This happens a lot in this school an hopefully something is done

I suggest you contact the school to set up a meeting with the principal and the superintendent, if possible. You do so in a classy and mature manner by either writing a letter or making the necessary phone call. By blaming the school and bashing it online you send a message to kids it is okay to do so. Discuss this in private and contact the people who can give you real answers.

obviously they already tried if the kids were punished to that extent. Sometimes other measures are necessary. I do want my kids to know that

The kids were in an altercation on school property during a sport function. Sounds like they need punishment.
Comparing their situation to someone else's will not solve anything.
Stick to their situation when talking with the Superintendant & Principal, and keep it professional and mature.
This forum will do nothing to help their situation.
Good luck.

I'm not saying they shouldn't be punished but the punishment is not justified. In school suspension would have been sufficient. My daughter made a phone call to the superintendent. He was suppose to call her back and never did. I call that irresponsible on his part. Sorry

I am the mother of the twins in this matter and I intend to go through all appropriate channels, take all the necessary steps, and follow proper procedure in filing an appeal!!!! I am in total disbelief over the punishment they received, especially due to the fact the other child involved clearly instigated the whole thing, not to mention how he was shouting the F word and other profanities at the coach when he broke it up and then ran off when told to sit. All three children were first given a 3 day suspension initially, then I got a call the next am from the principal who informed me he was increasing it to 5 days for all of them claiming he had spoken to the coach and some others and he felt the punishment should be increased......are you kidding me??? I realize a parent always defends their child, as I am, and they are no angels either!! But the punishment doesn't fit the crime so to speak! Violence is not the answer, and yes their has to be consequences, but 5 days oss is quite extreme for two 12 yr olds with no other offenses that reacted, although inappropriately, to another childs bullying!! Everyone has their own opinions, I didn't post to argue, so I won't reply to anyone. I will, however, take this all the way to the board in an effort to clear my children's names!....Goodnight.

Their Mother has said it well!!! As for the GPA I have seen report cards and unless the faculty lied the proof is in the pudding!!! As for the referral issue I personally don't know for positive but when I hear a numerous amount of comments from coming from many other students who were looking on that tells me something. This is not a bullying issue. The issue is the punishment handed out. Enough said!!!!

there are always stupid people that want to argue on here. I say go mom and grandma. Hopefully everything works out. I believe they should take into consideration past offenses and school records also.

The reason all kids involved in a fight are punishedequallyhas nothing to do with fairness, and has everything to do with the fact that every parent, friend, and witness has a bias. Without equal punishments, all punishments doled out by schools would be a popularity contest. I'm sure your little bundles of perfection probably played a role in this fight, and trying to deny that they can do wrong won't help them develop into functional adults.

Suck it. Up and deal with the suspension. Bringing lawyers into the mx just further takes focus away from education.
