"The borough buys electricity wholesale from American Municipal Power-Ohio and sells it to its residents at a profit instead of collecting property taxes."

When I itemize for my Federal Income Tax return, I can itemize my local property tax, but not my electric bill.

Blakely Borough is not doing anyone a favor by using the electric bill as a backdoor local tax. The portion of the electric bill that is actually tax would be able to be itemized if it were part of the local property tax.

This scheme in Blakely appears to be no property tax, but this actually increases the residents' Federal Tax burden.

If a resident pay an extra $500 a year for electricity and is in the 15% Federal Income Tax Bracket, and can itemize on their Federal Return; if the $500 were in the form of an actual property tax, there would be a $75 savings on their Federal Tax.
