How Ebay is Squeezing the Little Guy Out Using Flawed DSR System

Starting in 2008, ebay put into place a number of bad policies aimed at the gradual elimination of the small sellers in favor of high volume sellers. CEO Donahoe said as much in a speech in which he called the mom & Pops "noise". Ebay is in the process of transforming into a virtual overstock warehouse venue, similar to Amazon, and the "little guy" is not part of that picture. One of the ways in which small sellers are being eliminated is through the flawed DSR (Detailed Seller ratings) system. Smalls sellers are more immediately and severely impacted by a few low DSR ratings (1's and 2's) than are high volume sellers. Various punitive measures instantly go into place at ebay against a small seller if a few low DSRs have been left by buyers (even if left by mistake or unfairly). Among the punitive measures ebay imposes are a 21-day hold on a seller's PayPal funds, lower placement of a seller's items in ebay search, and Seller limitations upon the number of items a seller can list on ebay. All of this is driving small sellers off the site, thousands of whom are leaving ebay of their own accord because of these adverse measures.

Ina Steiner at has written a number of good articles on how DSRs impact small sellers at ebay and how ebay uses them to eliminate small sellers.

Ebay got hit with an antitrust lawsuit over DSRs last year. It will be interesting to see how that turns out when it goes to court.

One blog poster has this to say, "The sad part is that a big portion of less-than-5 DSRs are not meant to be left!! I have received many DSRs less than 5 that the buyer admitted (s)he didn’t mean to leave them. eBay makes it super easy for the buyers to make a mistake and leave low DSR (or less than perfect at least). It just takes a click. Also, when buyer contacts eBay and let them know the DSR was left by accident, eBay gives them a run-around and refuses to fix it. They often tell the buyer to ask the seller to send revision request!! You CANNOT send revision request for a positive feedback."
It’s many seller’s opinion (including me) that the eBay’s feedback system is broken.

Another poster in Seller Central (a discussion board on ebay) called moto-science expressed it like this: "Ebay doesn't deliver like it used to. Hostile to sellers atmosphere....worthless CS by design.

Continuous turmoil, invisible rules....etc. "Let them eat cake" management....

They use my listings for advertising other products, I use them for advertising my products.

Smart buyers today can easily use bing or google to find the lowest prices on new makes the Ebay platform an endangered species.

Ebay the place for Chinese wigs and trinkets...that you return."

Thank God they are ridding themselves of the flea market and yard sale hustlers. They ruin EBay.
